Hi all,
If anyone's interested there is a picture of the lockable Pull pal & Max
axe mounts I designed for the back of my RN custom roof rack on Chuque
Henry's web page. Go to list members bio's. There is a link in the text to

British Pacific offers Yakima rack adapters ($120) which attach to the
outer bars of the D90. You supply Yakima Crossbars ($40), and Yakima
Gunwale Brackets ($40). I personally prefer the Yak rack over Thule,
prices will be comparable. You can find either setup at any bike or
outdoor store.

Subject: [D90] Garvin D90 Rack
Garvin, who makes great racks, (and no, I don't work for them, but I had one of their racks on my FJ60) just came out with a rack that clamps onto the exterior rollcage of the D90 - using clamps similar to those sold to clamp onto the rollcage and accept Yakima or Thule crossbars. It's $495 complete, 5' wide x 3' front-to-back x 6" high, with the mounting clamps/towers and a flooring kit (powdercoated tubesteel, but you could make your own out of ply or MDO and save $114 less the cost of whatever flooring you use.) The rack is made of 3/4" steel tubing, black powdercoated, and they don't have those dorky-looking (to me anyway) sheet- steel-with-porthole gussets like Con-Fer uses.
You can see it on Atlantic British's website - www.roverparts.com. My only objection to it, (besides the fact that you can't get into a parking garage - but at least you can take it off for around-town driving) - and to the clamps/towers that take Yakima and/or Thule bars - is how high they make the rack sit above the top. Do any of you have the Yakima things (I think Rovers North and British Pacific sell them) and have you ever considered modifying them to reduce the overall height of the racks?
If the answer is no, I might just buy the Garvin setup and see if I can have the mounting things shortened and re-welded. And if not, just live with the height.
Thanks,
Craig Reece

Noel, yes, at least here in the U.S., the components of the Land Rover safari
roof rack (LRNA90FSRR) are all available separately, as follows:
basket (LRNA90FSRR01)
ladder (LRNA90FSRR02)
fitting kit (LRNA90FSRR03)
each front support link (LRNA90FSRR04)
each foot support (LRNA90FSRR05)
longitudinal rails (LRNA90FSRR06)
nutplate kit (LRNA90FSRR07).
What I have is the entire kit. The only rack/basket I use is the Land Rover one. I just remove it most of the time in order to fit in my garage.\

Subject: [D90] Roof Rack
Thanks to those that responded to my query about replacement foot supports
for my Land Rover roof rack. Neither Rovers North nor British Bulldog wanted
anything to do with it. They wouldn't make any effort to check into
availability. My LR dealer was reluctant to as well but after pressuring
their parts guy a bit he did some digging and what do you know - they can
get them! If anyone is interested, the part number is LRNA90SSRR05 and they
are $48.21 each. The price doesn't include the bolts. Obviously they're just
scraping by at that price ;-)

Subject: Re: RRO: Re: RE: Roof Rack Flooring
I'll probably get the "cheap guy" award for my rack flooring. Just before
the a trip two years ago, I decided I better get *something* down. I went by
a scrap metal place but their prices were way out of line for what I wanted.
This is for a rack off of an XD.
I decided to go by Home Depot and walk around to see if something would catch
my eye. Up and down... up and down each aisle. Nothing suited me. I wanted
lightweight...... cheap....... sturdy.
Then, I saw it. I was in the storage area and there was the wire closet
shelving. Cheap. Plastic-coated. LIGHT. I got 3 x 4 ft x 16 (I think)
inch shelves with 1 inch lips. Two go on the rear portion, one on the front.
Used black wire ties to hold them down. Cheap... light. All I really
needed was to floor the area between the tubes on the XD rack. The weight is
really on those tubes and shouldn't be on the shelves.... for the most part.
Two years later, they're still up there. I've strapped stuff to them, on top
of them, some light, some not so light. A little rust on the "cut" end of
the shelving. Jeez...... I may have to get some more wire ties. But....
cheap and light and they are doing the trick.
Cheers,
Gerry Elam

Subject: [D90] Re: Spare tire carriers [was: Doors?]
There are a couple more wheel carriers available from different vendors
The Kaymar carrier is very solid and looks capable of being modified to
carry more handy things:
http://www.kaymar.com.au/rover.html
I think Kaymar has a US distributor.
I wanted a wheel carrier that opened with the door so anyone unfortunate
enough to be riding in the back could get out,
I found one at Graeme Cooper Automotive http://www.lrexpert.com.au/
There is a photo of it on my web site at:
http://home.off-road.com/~landy/Whl_carr.htm
Now I am trying to figure out if I can carry Jerry cans externally by modifying the wheel carrier...

Take a look at my site if you want some ideas on how to modify your carrier
http://www.geocities.com/~xtremedefender/modifications.html
Not much on the site right now (Stacey is in the middle of fiddling around
with it) but if you look under modifications you can see what I did.

>This is probably a really old question (I did search the FAQ!) but does

>carrier or maybe a mod to keep the damn thing from rattling?
Chris,
From LRNA or your Fr$endly LR Dealer. Or BP or your favorite non punitive
LR parts source.
(39) The MALE part is ANR3117 and lists for US$0.93 and is called "CATCH MALE"
(32) The FEMALE part is 304125 and lists for US$2.58 and is called "BUFFER RUBBER"
(37) ANR3118 "CATCH FEMALE" should call up the rubber cup that mounts on
the angle bracket, however I got a US$23.80 bracket with the rubber part.
I believe these part numbers to be correct. I have found that I can easily
misread the LR parts book, however I just bought a set of these, see:
http://www.whiterover.com/resources/D90TireCarrier.html
Good luck,
Ben

Subject: RE: [D90] Buggered threads on spare tire carrier...
If you can get the spare tire off, there is a flat washer that is threaded
along with steel acorn style nuts behind the washers used as a baker to butt
up against the wheel. If possible you can use the washer with a pipe wrench and rotate to
chase/clean the threads ass you rotate off Before hand if you can get a die
grinder with a very thin cut off wheel grind 3~4 slots only as deep as the
threads 90 deg from the position of the thread. Basically what you are doing is making a inverted thread Die.
What this does is breaks the metal burrs' off while unthreading the washer.
If this does not make sense I will post on the web how too.
BTW The tread is 16mm x 1.5mm thread pitch.
