Anthony:
In a defender 90 you could use a couple different products on the wheel wells. The part 020 is a pair of speaker and storage lockboxes (specs listed on our web site) and this is the smaller of the two people have used. The price is $269 for the pair plus $20 s/h. The other option is our part 025, the super security storage trunk (specs listed on our web site). These are sold individually for $209 each plus $22 s/h. Padded cushions for the top are available for either box, for the 020, the pair of cushions is #30, and for the 025, cushions are custom made at about $50 each. You may key all your products alike by purchasing matching locks at $5 each (020 pair is already keyd alike). A note on the consoles, usually part 017 is used in a D-90 and runs $224 plus $20 s/h. No sales tax on anything since you are in VA.

Tuffy Consoles

I have had the 12" installed for 3 years. It's a tight fit. The seatbelts will rub the paint off in the small areas where they touch, but I really prefer it over the 10". It allowed me to put a ten disc changer inside and looks great!

Be sure to add the cup holders as well. They hold a super big gulp (or other large drinks) with no problem.

Cheers,

I use the 12" Tuffy and it works great! YOU MUST NOT use the original mounting points from the old box. The old box mounts on an access panel to the transfer case. This WILL NOT hold the Tuffy in a rollover! You must mount it to the floor! I had a roll-over and the only thing that saved me from the box caving in my skull was the radio cords...

Insulating the console from floor heat

Here's my .02. Given the furnace-like heat generated from the xfer case, I bought a sheet of 1/2" aluminum sided foam core insulation, cut out a section that fits under where the box goes, then covered it with dark gray indoor-outdoor carpeting. Then, I measured and drilled new holes in the appropriate locations (not the stock attachment points as mentioned) through the carpet/insulation/floor and mounted the box with galvanized bolts and 1" washers. It looks finished and keeps a lot of heat out of the truck. Good luck,

I went to home depot and got some indoor out door carpet. The kind I bought has a rubber backing and is a dark grey. I then went to pep boys and got a roll of heat shield. I used the heat shield across the seating platform and in side the seat boxes. I also used a piece along the transmission hump. In order to do this job you need some very sharp razor blades and you need to take out all the seats and center storage box. You Will also need scissors to cut the heat shield. I cut out flaps that you can pull back in order to access the battery and jack compartments. I actually put the flap toward the back of the seats so you pull it forward so to hide the cut in the carpet better. I also made sure not to put any heat shield where the carpet may get wet to avoid any future smell. After I was done I bolted the seats and storage box down over the carpet. Make sure to cut holes to allow the bolts to go through the carpet and shield. I think the end result looks very good. It has really had a DRASTIC effect on the HEAT and sound. The whole thing cost me about $90.00.
Carpet= 2 6x7 piece, 1 heat shield roll=6x4, razor blades, scissors, 3hours

Onboard refrigerators

Subject: [D90] ARB fridge (Was Moab Trail Guide)

There was a write up lately in one of the 4x4 magazines about the ARB fridge. They did not do a full detail IMO.

We have a non-ARB portable ref/freezer for our outings. It physical size is huge for the amount of storage space. It is 3 way power (12VDC, AC110V and propane) but will not freeze with 12VDC. It is a ChestCold brand from Australia and cost about $850. We opted for the larger size and it can store enough drinks and ice cream for days. In fact on the Chili Challenge trail the whole rover group was eating ice cream 3 out of the 4 days. We bought about 50 ice cream bars before we left Houston.

We still use dry ice to cool because we found out for as many times we open to get drinks all the BTU's are gone and only if it is running on propane will it keep up.

Catch is propane will only work if it is on semi level ground and fairly stable. While off-road the pilot light always goes out because of the off camber situations the rover is in.
