Momo steering wheel adapters

I managed to install my MOMO Competition wheel today, and I really like it too! It will get a little getting used to the fact that the turn/horn stalk is several inches further away from my fingertips now.

The trick is to know the diameter of the splined portion of your steering shaft. If the shaft is .650 inches or so, order MOMO hub part # 5603. This is the part speced for Range Rover. That is according to Kevin Rhodes at MOMO 1-800-749-6666 ext. 13. If your shaft measures more or less .750 inches across the splines, order MOMO part # 5613. I don't know which Rover this part is for, but it is called out on some online aftermarket app charts.

You can easily make a puller for your stock wheel from a piece or half inch thick aluminum stock and a few bolts. A standard gear puller will work to get the MOMO hub off.

One small problem with the MOMO hub adapter. It will not operate the self cancell on the turn signals. D'Oh! The two lugs on the back are just a little too short. It will be easy to solve this on Monday.....

BTW, if you don't like or don't want to pay for a MOMO wheel, once you get the hub there are adapters to fit other wheels to the hub. MOMO makes an adapter for Grant wheels, which are available from Summit Racing. If you have questions about Grant wheels, call Joey Ferrari at Grant or e-mail at  Joey Ferrari joeyferrari@earthlink.net .

Here's the final scoop on my MOMO wheel:

The turn signal stalks are VERY easy to bent to place them in the correct location for a reduced diameter steering wheel. Pull the rubber gaiter up onto the horn button, and using two pair of pliers, grab the stalk near the base with one pair and with the other gently bent the stalk to the desired location.

Getting the turn signals to cancel: I made a small bushing to to slip over the steering column. Into this bushing I made two small slots to engage the tabs on the back of the hub (these tabs are long enough to actually engage the blue self cancel unit on the stock wheel) and then trimmed off parts of the bushing to leave two tabs to engage the SC unit on the column. This sounds more difficult than it really is. I used both my mill and lathe, but you could really do this with a piece of PVC pipe and a hack saw and Dremil tool.

From 6/7/00:
I found the model number for the adapter. It's number 5607. To install it on a Defender, you need to trim the lip of the plastic shroud around the steering column. Trim the lip so that there's no more than maybe an eighth of an inch protruding toward the steering wheel. Ed Sanman '95 Soft Top

Later on 6/7/00:
I installed the 5607 about 5 years ago, and it couldn't work better. Originally, I bought a different one from Rovers North and it didn't work well at all. I don't remember the number, but Rovers North stopped selling it soon after I bought mine.

On 6/8/00
OK, I went to the FAQ steering wheel section and read the messages (Michael's posts above - ed.). With the 5607, there only mod you need to do is trim the plastic shroud, as I mentioned yesterday. The 5607 has the correct tabs for cancelling the turn signals, unlike the 5603 that others have used. It's also a little shorter, so the stalks only have to be bent very little. As I had mentioned, Rovers North sent me one which mounted OK, but it didn't cancel the signals. And it was deeper than the 5607, which moved the wheel a long way from the stalks.

Hand throttles

As for the hand throttle, Predator 4WD here in Colorado Springs (you should remember them) has hand throttles for sale. Basically a gear shift lever from a multi-speed mountain bike. Attach the lever to the gear stick and run the cable to the throttle on the carb, viola a hand throttle (I paid $19 for mine and works great)

Hope this helps and regular disclaimers apply

(even more disclainers - the poster refers to a Series LR, but the same principle should work on the D90.)
