Pull off the heater inlet grill on the wing. You can then access the fan and spin it by hand to see if it is frozen. Just spinning it by hand will probably fix the problem as there is probably a thin layer of ice on the commutator or the brushes. Good luck.

The little slide controls for the heater are badly designed - particlularly the heater level lever, which tends to get stuck in the off position. The other lever, for defrost or feet heating, tends not to get stuck. I eliminated the detent on the heater level lever - there is enough natural friction to stay put wherever you place it. If you take it apart, you'll see what you need to do.

My heater controls were stuck like that when I got my D. I pulled the side of the dash off to expose the controls, and put a little grease on the sliding mech. After that the controls have worked well. It gets pretty dusty in there, so you may need to clean it every once in a while.

Subject: [D90] Heaters?

Hi all,the heater in both of my D90's started getting a bit on the sad side,so I decided to remove the whole heater unit and give it an overhaul,it's really easy. (Applies to NON air-con models,I don't know if the heater unit is the same as air-con types?)

1) remove both water pipes into the top of the heater.
2) disconnect both cables.(the ones that run to the control on the dash)
3) unplug the power cable.
4) there is two 1/2 inch (13mm) bolts on the top of the heater.loosen these (or fully remove) you don't have to take them right out,but it's a little easier if you do.
5) at the bottom of the heater are two 10mm bolts that run into the footwell.it's easier to get someone to hold the inner end of the bolt while you undo the ones on the heater, unless you have EXTRMELY long arms!
6) take the grille off of the top of the wing (7 cross head screws)
7) move the intake duct away from the heater.it is stuck to the heater with a large, round foam piece.if you are careful you can just un-stick it.if it breaks (mine did) when I refitted it I just used silicon mastic to join the two together.the foam is available as a genuine part.got the number at home if you want it.
8) pull the heater up and out of the engine bay.there is another foam seal onto the bulkhead (firewall)

That is the heater out of the vehicle.

To strip it down, you need to drill out about 20 small 1/8 pop rivets that hold the heater matrix in place.it is easy to see which ones hold it in.(it comes out of the top of the heater unit)

When I pulled my one out,it was totally bunged up with mud, solid! so I just threw it into a bucket of warm water for 1/2 an hour and then gently hosed it through until I could see through it again.(the heater matrix is just a small radiator like in the front if the vehicle, with fins that can be easily bent,so be careful). Inside the heater itself mine was just full of lumps of dried mud,I pulled out what I could and steam cleaned the rest out and got it spotless, you could eat your dinner off of it!! The mud had gotten into the heater when I drove through muddy water and it splashed over the wings,it then worked it's way down the intake duct into the heater itself.I was amazed to see how much had got into it.it even jammed up the flap that stops air going into the cab.

re-assembly is just the reverse of dis-assembly,it only takes a couple of hours and man,did it make a difference! There is also a land rover part number for a "grille,  chamois " that screws over the wing where the intake is and hangs down the side of the wing.the army use them in Norway where there is a lot of snow.it's so the heater can suck in air when it's 3feet deep in the white stuff.I'll post the part numbers for the parts I mentioned when I get home and dig out the catalogues. hope this helped a bit!

To get the fan bit off of the motor shaft, it took a 'little persuasion' to say the least! it's an interferance fit, so it's going to be tight anyway, but i just used a small drift (slightly smaller than the diameter of the motor shaft) and knocked it through, whilst to hold on to the fan (to enable the motor/heater unit to move backwards thus releasing the fan) It will go!

Ductwork

The part numbers for the "Chamois cover - intake" (what a name!) is...
RHD models RRC6818
LHD models RRC6817

these screw onto the wingtop over the heater intake and, basically, extend the air intake for the heater down the side of the wing. I was looking on the www to try and find a picture,I've seen it on there before but couldn't remember where. it stops snow from blocking the hater intake, but would help stop water, and with a filter inserted into it, would also stop as much dust from entering the heater.
Might help a bit!

Performance enhancing modifications

There are many different things you can do for heat, the following are the most common:

Radiator Muff - Makes engine heat up faster

Drop Curtain - Reduce the area you are heating

Better door sealing - Stop the drafts

Open heater vents wide - For more warm air

Scoops to replace covers on wing tops, force more air into heating system I couldn't find them on the site, but I think Rovers North sells them.

All of these things will help, I think the drop curtain makes the most significant gains.

Engine Block Heater
PRC9674

$81.80 from the dealer. Rovers North had them for $35.50, but that was two years ago.
