"I don't think I quite understand how the "width of the input gears" prevents the use of the new GKN overdrive. Please explain yourself a bit better. I am quite interested in the overdrive.
sorry i will try to explain,
The LT 230 suffix A and B transfer boxes had a 27mm wide input gear with a 14 degree tooth angle,
the LT 230 suffix C and D boxes have a 32mm wide gear with a 22 degree tooth angle,
the Overdrive replaces the input gear.
The Overdrive is only made with the 32mm wide gear and cannot be used inplace of the 27mm wide gear due to tooth angles.
The 1.003 ratio intermeadiate and hi range output gears were only made to run with the 27mm wide gear.
Thus the overdrive cannot be fitted with the 1.003 ratio LT 230.
Does this make any more sense ?

Bill,
I'm running Buckshot 36" tires and Ashcroft 4:10 R&P's with the underdrive.
I love this setup. The 36"/ 4:10 combo gives me slightly lower gearing than
stock so climbing hills on the highway is no longer a problem in 5th and
keeps the revs at 26-2800rpm @ 70-75mph.
The Ashcroft underdrive is great. Gives me about 120:1 low low range. On the
serious stuff I can climb things slowly with more control now. One word of
caution with gearing that low the 90 is like a little tractor. You have to
let the gearing and suspension do the work. If you get too heavy on the
throttle you will break something!
I find that using the underdrive with the transmission in 2nd is a good
overall gearing combo for slow crawling. This lets me still play the
throttle a bit.

Bill-
I got the prototype Ashcroft crawler back in March '97. I have had
absolutely no problems with it. If you're interested in rockcrawling (and I
assume you are since you're in Arizona), then it is an essential piece of
equipment for your defender. The crawler box itself is easy to install - it
bolts into the PTO on the LT230 transfer case. Locating the lever to engage
the crawler is a little problematic as you need to install some sort of
lever or cable.
I am almost to the stage of putting a crawler box on my lightweight hybrid
project. I plan to take some jpegs so that others that are interested can
see how it's done here in Texas :-)

In the limited amount of time I've run the underdrive, I've been very
impressed. Real difficulty is instally the shifter. Other than
that it is a, rather complex, bolt on. I've had some oil leakage issues.
But they seem to be solvable. Just a pain in the #$%(.
