Starter Problems

Last weekend I went to start my D-90 and nothing happened. It didn't even attempt to turn over. I figured it was probably the starter so I used the old 'bang on it with a stick' method to see if that would reseat the brushes and at least get me home. This appeared to work. It started after I thumped it. Got it home and ordered some new brushes for it.

I got the brushes and installed them and replaced the starter and now I've got nothing. I happened to have the fuse box cover off and I'm seeing a spark in the fuze so I assume it's getting power.

Any ideas?

How did it look when you took it apart to replace the brushes? The contacts could be really pitted and this would also cause a problem. Also the cables that connect to should be real clean and free of corrosion.

It looked fine other than some worn brushes. I did take it out mudding a couple weeks ago but it has been acting fine since then. There is a bit of rust on the gears but nothing dramatic. I'm gonna pull it again and take it to the alternator/rebuild rebuild place that had the brushes I needed and let them run a diag on it. I'm assuming a bad solenoid or something. Luckily the weather has been crappy lately so I haven't been too tempted to drive the D90.

Oh in case anybody cares, the brush kit that Atlantic British sells for D90 starters isn't correct. At least not for mine. My starter is an original Land Rover stamped NAD10038. It takes a Bosch brush kit #69-9111.

There are I think 3 or 4 differant starters for D-90s. Some Bosch and some Lucas and they are not the same. So they could have sent you the brushes for the wrong starter.

I took apart my starter last night. It's a Bosch unit. The brushes are fine but are far from new.
I had bought a set of brushes from Atlantic British before hand..... Those don't fit. The kind of brushes I need are on a single "ring" (with the wire spot welded to the plugs).
Any idea where I could source those brushes? Should I just try a local shop that rebuild starters? Any place (cheaper?) online?
I am also thinking that while it is out, it might be a good (?) idea to replace the Bendix (if that's how its called in English) at the same time (for me the Bendix is the coil that pushes the starters against the clutch crown). Same question: where can I find one of those (seemed like a sealed unit, so I did not mess too much with it).

BTW, please where re-installing starters on your trucks, do not overtighted them and grease the bolt thread..... I had to undo my exhaust to be able to grind the head of the top bolt that was totally locked.... Over 8 hours of work just for a stupid small (but strong) bolt!

check all your earth connections, particularly the one from the engine block to the chassis

Browsing around, it appears the "Bendix" is actually called the "Starter Solenoid"! :-)
