I just noticed that a headlight is out, 1st one in 10 years! Should my local Autozone, Pepboys etc. have replacements? Anyone have suggestions as to the best, part #s, price?
As always, thanks guys, Burke

all should have a replacement. I know for sure NAPA does. Don't remember the price. I went in and asked if they had replacemnet lights for a land rover defender.

If I'm not mistaken, it's the same as the Jeep TJ's - and they have tons of replacement for those (I think they're 7" in diameter).
One thing you might want to do is to upgrade to the Hella H4 replacement headlamp for a brighter system. EE and other vendors sell them.

Yep, just a standard 7" sealed beam replacement. Should be available anywhere, soooo many cars used them.

And EE just got them in. They were out of stock for quite some time.

Burke, you can find most of your replacements to your headlamps at a local auto parts reseller (PepBoys, Zones & etc), I'm not a big PepBoys guy but they do have the parts...
I just replaced with Sylvania but I didn't use a sealed bulb, if you get a sealed bulb the number to get is #H6024, if you go the way "replacement bulbs" type headlamps you can use a 9003 or an H4 replacement bulb...
Hope this helps???

Perfect time to upgrade to Hella headlights. BIG improvement over sealed beams. EE or Susquehanna Motorsports.

Wow, hate to sound ignorant, but what is EE you guys are talking about? It may not be a Southern/Eastern thing. Also, I am a big Hella fan, is there a big price difference in the hellas? I would probably need to order them correct?

I have been doing some Hella H4 research. I have seen that they are not "road legal". Now I am not the most "road legal" citizen around, but am I going to be getting high beam flashes at night, and worse, blue light flashes leaving the local pub? Other than that, the Hellas seem the way to go?!?

As long as you don't point them at the sky when you put them in then you won't be pulled over.

The only reason the H4's aren't road legal with the bulbs that come with them are because of the beam pattern. It's a european spec beam as opposed to the US DOT pattern that is required. (Odd note, all DOT sealed beams will have 3 little nubs on the outside face of the lens. No nubs = no legal)
They actually have a pretty distinct cutoff to prevent them from blinding other drivers. Very effective pattern, and the extra wattage does not hinder other drivers except when you have your high beams on. Just remember that you may need to upgrade the wiring if you go with higher wattage bulbs than they come with.

looks like it's too late, but I had hellas on my truck and I hated them. They turned brown after a couple of water crossings and to be honest with you...they just never performed as well regular halogen bulbs from Autozone. I have 6 Hellas on the ARB and roll bar and I love them...but the headlight replacements sucked. My $.02

Or, you could go to your local auto store and pick up a pair of standard prong motorcycle bulbs. 80watt lows and 100watt highs as bright as the hella replacement and fit right in. $12 for both. If you still really want the Hella, you can take 2 $50 dollar bills and wrap them around the back of each light so it refracts the light just like the Hella and costs the same :rolleyes

Anyone tried these:
GCR "Truck-Lite" Headlamps ( http://www.gulfcoastrovers.com/all/trucklite/index.htm )

FWIW - I am currently running Truck-Lite Polycarbonite headlights with Sylvania Silverstar bulbs. I really like the beam pattern off the lenses.

I currently have Wagner Halogens. They don't seem very bright. Will the Hella Vision Plus be an improvement?

Go to www.rallylights.com. Pickup the (http://www.rallylights.com/hella/wiring_harnesses.asp) replacement Hella wiring harness. It will allow you to increase the wattage of your bulbs without frying your factory light switch. Then maybe get some new light housings. But the harness is the most important imporvement.

As on "old schooler" - I run Cibie 7" lights - a little harder to find but a better light than Hellas in my opinion - I think I got my latest set from one of the Miata websites.

Just decided to browse a bit and noticed this old thread on Headlamps.
A great alternative to all those "bling" headlamps is available from Alan Dobbs at GCR:

I've had mine for quite a few years and they flat WORK!
Doug
PS: OOPS: just went to page 2 of this thread and see some people mentioned these! Sorry. But my recommendation stands!!

However, it IS a photo of an H1, which is acceptable.

Upgrade the wiring? Or just use the relay deal so the switch doesnt get fried?
[the light ciruit goes through the hi/lo beam switch - so if you up the bulb wattage, you up the current through the switch and likely will burn it sooner rather than later].

That's basically what I mean, though I like to run larger gauge wiring in the portion that runs to the bulbs. The factory stuff is really thin, but yes relay too.

Is anybody running Sylvania Silverstar bulbs with factory wiring?

I am running the silver star... I have not noticed any issues, except having to replace the light switch, which is a normal Defender problem.
Not to hi-jack this post, but has anyone done a Xenon/HID conversion? My buddy did his BMW, and it seemed pretty easy.

I am, and now that I say it something tells me I'll have to replace the switch...

Don't replace the switch, insert a harness that takes the load off the switch....
Then your switch will never fail.

I'm curious about a xenon/HID conversion as well. Anyone done it?
