I have been reading some old threads about these roof racks and now I want to find one. Maybe someone can save me a lot of digging around and point me in the right direction. Where is the best pace to find one new or used right now?

Solihull Society in the for sale section. You can become a member and buy a roof rack. :) It's only $30 for out of state members, and as far as the roof rack price goes, well that's between you and the seller.
Good luck

Thanks. I put an email out to him. So, there are no new ones left anywhere to be found?

If I was to guess the reasons why people do eventually sell their safari racks, I'd say gas mileage, garage clearance and lack of use. I wanted one too at one point but I drive on the fwy too much and the cost would outweigh the cool factor. Unless you really are going to use the rack than by all means buy one I think. Just ask yourself if you really do need one.

I got one and never put anything up there b/c it makes the already bad areodynamics of the D-90 even worse. I am going to have some bars fabbed so I can at least take the basket off. It adds noise as well.
But it does look good. - LOL
Good luck with your search.

I use mine all the time- allows me to actually be able to use the back seat for people as opposed to luggage and another vehicle. Not to mention throwing things up there that are long, dirty or awkward. I used a product from FarmTek that is used in chicken coops so I can put smaller items up top as well.
If you're that worried about gas mileage buy a Prius.
P.S. These racks are like Hen's teeth- good luck.

Jeez, having the roof rack makes the 90 as practical as a pickup truck! A couple pelican 1650's and your gear on top is more weatherproof than anything you have stored in the truck.
I have a Tdi, but I have not noticed any decline in fuel mileage with the rack, or even the roof tent. I pulled a loaded trailer through the rockies and still only lost a couple mpg.

Speaking of Pelican cases, Fry's electronics has a good selection of them.

Anybody with a hardtop should seriously consider a Hannibal Rack - they are very well built and reasonably light and I can't detect any noticeable wind noise with mine. You can even remove the side rails for more clearance pretty easily.

Yeah, I saw yours at the SAE. It is very nice too. I am just after the OEM parts right now. In fact, I don't know if I would even mount it if I found one, I just want to know that I have it for the future. I don't think I could drill the holes in the 90, it would hurt me too bad!

No offense, but for the sake of guys like me that actually NEED one right now, I hope there arn`t too many guys out there with that mentality.

Well if you NEED one right now, there are plenty of great alternatives. I just know that OEM parts that are in good shape will only get more scarce as time goes on, this is why I would like to find one. Don't get me wrong, I don't want one to turn around and sell it one day, I would just like to find one in decent shape now before they are going for $3,000 dollars.

a) Decent alternatives for a full length roof rack? Like what? The full length Rovers North rack looks like crap, the NWP rack is crap... So what are my great alternatives?
b) They are already going for $3k on eBay.
c) SD has already said they will reproduce the rack, so if you arn`t going to use it in the mean time, why not just wait for a new one? I would happily wait for a new one, if it weren`t for the fact that I need it within the next 2-3 months

Nate - just look for a ladder - the basket and crossbars can be fabbed EZ. Shane at Rover Hybrids made me a basket that I like a lot better than the OEM one - you should swing by and check it out - its f'n money.

You mind if I ask what it set you back?
Also, I`ll be in Los Altos the first week of March... are you/ the D90 going to be around?

I'll be out of town by about 24 feb for good, but I'll post some pix. The basket wasnt cheap, but it was a lot less than the 3k one on ebay.

SD has been claiming to remake the roofrack for years. There are several posts on D-90 where this issue is brought up time and again without SD delivering. I just don't see it ever happening. If I owned a machine shop I'd copy the exact dims of the OEM rack, build hundreds and see the work pay off big time. I just saw one go for OVER $3K!
There's just something to be said about the OEM Safety Devices rack- to me just screams Rover.

Guys
I keep hearing about this egregious $3K ebay rack, which I assume was used, but does anyone have confirmation that it's actually been bought?
Even so, it doesn't mean all racks are posting at the level.
The point is some people buy D90's for 50-large with the same amount of miles so don't let this spuirious sale cast the die for OEM racks.
I've seen many go for $1000-1800 depending on the shape they're in.
That's still a chunk of dough, but not it's not a blistering amount.

Yes, this rack (Ebay #150071415504) was purchased for $3,350 plus shipping. Regardless, good use of the word egregious. Also, D-90's are going between 38K and 55K out of Copley all of the time.
I'm just thankful for boards like this where you can get D stuff at a reasonable rate. Not that Copley isn't reasonable. When I decide to part ways with my rack I'm going to offer it here first and reciprocate directly to the community just like DJ did for me. :)

Hannibal Racks are $1200 from AB - better rack for less $$$ in my opinion.

Dear Mr. Palmer,
Thank you for your enquiry. We re-structured our company in 2005/2006 and re-located our main production plant to a new site
outside of the U.K. During that phase, we discontinued all production - including that of the roof racks.
We re-convened the production of our roll cages in 2006, and will be looking at the roof rack market in 2007. We are not yet
sure which racks we will continue to produce, but thank you for your interest. There is no remaining stock of the rack you are looking
for - but I will investigate whether any of the companies we have supplied in the past, may still have one on the shelf.
Please communicate with me directly using my email address below:
