I am taking out my heater core, hasn't worked in years anyway. Anything I need to know? Any pointers? Thanks!

Hey David,
First... take the hood off.
Remove heater hoses, and cables (don't loose the little green clips!!)
Then fastners on the wing, and remove the ducting to the heater. Go to the passenger foot well and remove the bolts that that secure the heater braket (easier with another hand).

You should be able to remove the entire heater. Take it to the bench and drill out all the rivits holding the top and bottom on. The heater core should then just fall out. you may take thie oppertunity to check the blower motor for function and clean it of dirt.

NOTE: Either be gentle with the foam that seals the core or use some weather striping to replace it around the core itself as well as the junction of the heater box and bulkhead.

Now just and rivit away and put the whole thing back togather.

It is really quite easy.... by far the easiest heater core I have ever done on any auto.

Feel free to ask any questions... but I'm sure you will find it easy.

Don't order a replacement from AB. It's a Britpart and the inlet/outlet hose connections are too close together-makes it very difficult to get the hoses on. Also, it's not a drop in fit and required some cutting of the heater box to make it fit.
Best to go genuine on this one.

I also drilled three holes in the low point where the blower is attached for water drainage.

Thanks a lot! Sounds reletively easy. I am not replacing it, I am just pulling it all out and maybe building some storage where it used to be. No point in really having it as I don't have doors or a roof. ;) Can I just cut the coolant hose and loop it back to the motor?

Yep. I had my heater bypassed that way for a while.
You shoud run that hot coolant to another tank to heat veggie oil. That would be one bad ass beast running on grease!!!

I was trying to think of some use for the heat, not coming up with much. I like to support Big Oil as much possible. Foreign Big Oil is even better.

For those of you who have replaced the heater core, where did you buy an OEM heater core?

Then you don't want to remove the core. Pull the whole heater unit and intake duct and throw them away.

Don't you even need defogging? Even when I lived in tropical Australia I used the heater on occasion.....

I believe RN sells the core. But not sure if it is proline or not.

AB is in the process of bringing the Genuine cores in.

Bought genuine at Rovers North but hadn't had a chance to replace it until today. It wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. Followed the steps mentioned here

http://d-90.com/forum/showthread.php?t=19520

And this attachment

http://d-90.com/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=18522

There were no rivets to remove on my '94's heater box.

Just little black screws that hold two plates at the top and bottom of the heater core. These two sets of plates hold the core in place.

Just saved myself 2-3 hours of somebody's shop rate.

Hey,

Does anybody know the exact ID of the hoses that run to and from the heater? I want to try something, but don't have the original hoses anymore. Thanks

I'm pretty sure it is 5/8" ID.

Thanks,

I have 5/8 hoses now but I was sure they are too loose fitting to be correct.
