You're an immediate gratification guy arent you?

BTW - why do you have to wait until June - I'm trying to find if it says when the first issue ships and I dont see it anywhere?

See the bit about June 31 date under their Charter (see thumbnail below). A publication like this is a rare beast. Yes, I'm easily satisfied but equally capable of dishing out dissatisfaction when warranted. Eating my words is common.

The way I read it, the June 30th date is the latest date which they will offer the "Charter Subscriber" offer.

I'm all revved up to subscribe, but I need to know when the are mailing, since I'm in the middle of an extended move and I dont want nice magazines going to the wrong places.

$10 an issue is pretty steep.
I'll wait for the DVD.

Overlander
March 30th, 2007, 09:42 AM
I'm paying $8 an issue now for LRO, with stupid (my opinion) articles on rover hybrid abominations ( I can't believe people do that to rovers), and repetative DIY Series restorations (seriously beat to death topic). I get maybe one story of interest, and a throw-me-a-bone coverage once in a while in the tech session. Oh ya, who cares what the editorial staff drives? Or what tool of the month they keep in their vehicle (gerber knife, work lamp, ipod...seriously). And worst of all, it's the only option out there!

p.s. anybody here planning on green laning on someones farm in scotland anytime soon?

Overlander, (cool name choice)

Thanks for posting the link to our Journal. We are very excited about the first issue, which goes to print next week. Being an independent magazine, your support is greatly appreciated.
Oh, and issue two will have articles from both Tom Sheppard (VDEG) and Tom Collins (US Camel Trophy Team Director) :) Thought you would want to know...

Please let me know if I can answer any questions.

Even though I'm leary of new mags these days (way to many are long on fluff posh crap and short on substance) I decided to give it a go and bought a 2 year subscription.
If the magazine is 1/2 as good as the books "Overlanding", "Overland" or "Cruising the Sahara", I'll be happy.

I signed up for a two year subscription several weeks ago - one look at the editorial staff was all it took to convince me to subscribe. Tom Sheppard's first book is selling for $250 on Ebay if you haven't looked lately. Lots of other talent there too.

The Premier issue of Overland Journal has printed, and is in the mail. Those in UT and CO should have seen it today, with CA and AZ showing up tomorrow or Friday :)

Thanks so much to all that supported our independent publication. Everyone who subscribes between now and the 30th of June will receive the premier issue. Issue two has some great content lined up too, including Tom Collins pre-scout of the 1994 Camel Trophy in Defenders and Tom Sheppard has provided a technical piece on digital photography while on expedition. Very cool stuff.

I finally got my issue yesterday, and all I can say is "DAMN". This is the first time in my life that I have received a magazine, where I wanted to read EVERY article. I breezed through the journal last night, and realized it has too much rich content to read in one sitting. This is the perfect periodical if I'm going to fly internationally and stuck on a plane for 10+ hours. The quality is second to none- definite coffee table material.

Where was this when I was stuck in Iraq for 10 months?

I thought I combed the internet for overland equipment retailers thoroughly, only to find out that there was about 10 advertisers in this magazine I had never heard of. It goes to show, it's all about who you know.

Hey Scott,
I loved the write up on Graham Jackson's 110 modification in the "...dark continent" article, but I would love to hear more about the unseen modifications he did. On his website, he refers to a custom steel box mounted on the frame that he used to hold enough quarts of oil for a full change. I'm very interested in that mod.

I think it would rock if we could have the editorial staff leverage this forum, or some forum to interact with the readers, on the dozens of follow up questions (at least from me) that will occur after each issue. Maybe we could add a new section in here on overland something, something for that purpose.

I really enjoyed the magazine and look forward to future issues. I used to subscribe to a few 4 wheeler magazines but have since stopped. Overlander fills the void perfectly. There are few magazines that I would consider it's peer, the only ones that come to mind are Surfers Journal and www.alpinist.com Alpinist captures the soul of climbing. Overlander is close on Overlanders heels to capturing the same type of feeling and soul.

Good job.

Thanks to all of you for those kind comments. We will stay on the ball to continually improve Overland Journal. The next issue will feature a great story by Tom Collins about the scouting trip for the 1994 Camel Trophy, and another by Stephen Bodio about Mongolian falconers who fly golden eagles. Good stuff.

Mark, we'll take your suggestions seriously.

in advance of the 2nd issue of overland journal, which will give us some expert guidance on expedition photography (which i could use because my pictures suck), take a look at this most excellent slide show put together by a south american expedition guide company that traveled to patagonia in argentina earlier this year in a 110. the photography is amazing.

This magazine is better than anything I've ever subscribed to. Totally worth it for just the pics alone! I've been carrying it around with me for three days now showing it off.
One question though, did you guys recieve your hat, stickers, etc...because I did not. Maybe it'll show up in the mail though. Normally I don't care about that kind of bonus garbage, but this magazine is something for Rover fans to be proud of. I didn't see one Wrangler in the whole thing (thank God), and that is hard to do for a 4wd magazine!
Keep the great pics of all the Rovers and cool articles coming. Top Notch!

BTW-I went out and bought 2 Maxpedition bags today. They are perfect for shooting/shoving all my stuff into. I highly reccomend picking up a bag or two if you occasionally use a backpack. These bags are so much better.

Thanks again for all of the support and to those that became Charter Subscribers. The second issue is nearly finished and includes expeditions in Mongolia, South America, Utah, etc. The South American expedition is part one of the Camel Trophy prescout of the 1994 event, writen by Tom Collins. Lots more Defender love there :)

Just an FYI, but the Charter Subscriber program (http://www.overlandjournal.com/subscribe.html) ends in three days (June 30th). This will be the last chance to get the hat, decal and the Premier Issue.

Ok, I am in too, just pulled the trigger. Looks like it will be a wonderful cross between National Geographic and an offroad mag. that writes about more than lifts and rock crawling. I also like the fact it is not vehicle specific. I own a D90 and a Wrangler, and love all things Cruiser, Scout, Unimog, Bronco, Hummer, etc. (But let's see lots of Rovers ok?) ;)

The tires that were on Grendel are P78x16. A good 33 inches tall, and as far as I'm concerned way too big for stock Series axles. I'll be swapping them for 235/85/16 MTs soon, then save for the GBR rear axle/ARB kit.

Overland Journal has completed our winter 2010 edition, which ships in the next 7-10 days. This issue includes stories from the Canol Road expedition and a fantastic trip through the Michigan UP. We also complete the most comprehensive sleeping bag test in the history of print, which includes some compelling results and testing methods to show heat retention and leaking.
