That is one tall engine in there, no wonder the hood buldge was needed. I have to wonder if it is any better, or just more cost effective "Parts Bining" though. Is it me, or is that the same steering wheel Land Rover used on the first release Discoveries in the UK? Certainly looks like it is still the same steering column trim that is on our 90's. And what did they do with the shifters, dip them in a big can of "Plasti-Dip" (http://www.plastidip.com/consumer/index.html)?

I suspect the engine change is for emission reasons, not power.

Nice gearbox though. I think 63:1 crawl ratio.

The guys on the UK 90 site who have driven it really love it. Six speed transmission with a lower first gear and lots of power.

From the AutoCar UK Article (http://www.autocar.co.uk/CarReviews/RoadTestsVerdict/Land-Rover-Defender-90-2.4D-XS/225183/):

"Low range, unswitchable traction control (optional with ABS) and differential locks complete the picture."

Should I assume they are just refering to the center differential, or is Land Rover finally fitting Lockers!?!?

I like it. Although it looks as if the cab is even more cramped.

Thanks for the pics mike.

It definitely has its place. I can't say I wouldnt enjoy driving around in all that cossetted comfort and convenience every day. Whats going to be fun is seeing how many of the new parts can easily be adapted as upgrades for older trucks.

. . . Whats going to be fun is seeing how many of the new parts can easily be adapted as upgrades for older trucks.I already posted this link on another thread before I read this one, but it seems to belong here even more (sorry for the duplication).

It looks like Land Rover is going to be making a Soft Top again, based generally on our NAS models:

Since we can't have the actual truck, it would be nice if we at least got alot of modernized, equivalent parts out of the deal, I'm thinking.

Wonder if Chris at Badger knows anything about that? They might've gone to him again (if they're smart) for insight into their soft top design?

So Mike, when will they bring it here?

Maybe with the new NAS edition they'll come up with a non-crap removable fiberglass hardtop. Take a cue from the Jeep guys on that one!

If so, I'll be one of the first in line to get one (the top, that is!)
