View Full Version : Heater Air Scoops
Davis

I just could not break down and spend the $$$$ for the heater air scoops that RN and others sell, so I made a form and made my own (fiberglass, pretty damn strong). If anyone else has issues with their vents freezing up or wants the advantages of these scoops, I would be happy to make some more--really I don't care. I figure $20 is reasonable--it takes a few hours start to finish. I will post pic's if anyone is interested, if not, no worries.

Another shot (CVC--much easier system to show photos!) I increased the height slightly from this prototype as well--when I finish off the one I am doing on Saturday, I will post it as well (uninstalled).

I'm on the list too. And a question, since you seem to know this stuff, ever though about hood vents? Could you make them?

I just finalized the mold--I made it slightly higher than the first and made the first one yesterday--it has the right proportions. I will drill it and paint it and post the photo in the next couple days--Dave has graciously allowed me to post on his website so I will provide the link, too.

Would it help keep the engine cooler by running one on the other side as well as the heater? I figure, you should probably replace both.
thanks

I really have no clue about the other side and if it would add cooling--if I had to guess, I would say it would not do squat-- but it would be easy enough to make one for you...since now that you mention it I kind of want one too--which means I will be making a mold for myself. Kind of makes it symetrical--I am sure Max would like that.

I will most likely be in for one when ready.

I have a scoop on the driver's side to help with engine cooling since I'm running a super charger and don't have a snorkel yet.
I can't say for sure if it really does anything, but can say that I've (knock on wood) not had any cooling issues to date.
It can't hurt.

I made 5 shells today--I have to install the mesh and paint. I will probably do a bunch more tomorrow unless it snows--I can't use the fiberglass epoxy in my garage because the fumes go into the house. For those that want both sides, let me know so I can "match" them as close as possible. I sent Dave Lucas some shots that he will "host" on his site (I will post that address soon). I have kept quality as high as I can, but keep in mind these are still hand made (like the D90!), so there may be slight imperfections--I am not going to spend an hour sanding each one after I make it (at least not for $20), but I do care and I do make them each as best as I can. If you are an anal bling freak, don't get one. As far as that goes, if you don't like it, I will give your money back, absolutely. Here is a shot

I have sent the first 5 people PM's since I have finished the first batch--I am on the next batch. I will be finishing the mold on the left hand vent matching the right later this week for those that wanted pairs. I am going straight down the list in order, so if I have not got to you it is because I feel it is only fair to deal with product that I have already done.
Best regards,
Chris
