randy-
which gas tank are you using? ... or are you doing rear and an auxillary?

Troy, For now just the standard euro side tank. Don't worry, I will be putting some type of skid plate under it.

Looks great Randy :) I really like how it's coming along, and I'm sure your 90 will look awesome when you put the NAS roll cage :grin

So with the euro gas tank you cannot use the storage under the passenger seat right?

TDI Guy
February 22nd, 2004, 12:03 PM
Yes, It will look good with the cage:tounge..And yes, the tank is under the passenger side seat so there is no storage there which sucks..The biggest problem is it hangs low but I will make a custom skid plate for it. Maybe some heavy duty aluminum plate or something.

How are you suppose to paint the body parts correctly when it's on the truck?

TDI Guy
February 23rd, 2004, 07:30 AM
They are coming off again for prep and paint. Then going back on painted. It's a pain in the ass but that is the right way to do it

what color it gonna be?

TDI Guy
February 23rd, 2004, 08:42 AM
MmmmMMm I think it will Be AA Yellow with an alpine white top:eek:  I copied a pic from the ECR truck and put it in the photo shop for a repaint.. This is what I will hope it will look like..

Hey Randy,

Make sure you go see the AA yellow somewhere in person before you choose for sure. That picture you posted is much more "Yellow" than AA yellow. The AA is a little more orange and once I saw it in person I went with a different yellow, more like the one in your picture. Could just be my computer screen too. Just FYI. Here is a low quality pic. Came out dark for some reason.

TDI Guy
February 23rd, 2004, 11:03 AM
Dave, I have a few good pics of your truck that you sent me. I thought yours was AA yellow.. I love the color of your truck. Ahhh its a custom color.

Buckon37s
February 23rd, 2004, 11:08 AM
Hey Randy,

It's not custom, its "Dodge Viper Racing Yellow" I also liked the "Saturn Yellow" but no way I could choose that over VIPER YELLOW! You can get it at any good paint shop. I am very happy with the color. Just what I wanted. I was even going to go white roof like you but then changed at the last possible second to all yellow. Man, your truck is going to be amazing. You will probably spray the inside too, which is going to be way cooler. I just went black on the inside.

TDI Guy
February 23rd, 2004, 11:22 AM
LOL.. Saturn yellow no mater how good it looked would be :rainbow .. Actually, I hate to say it but the Hum%er yellow is nice too. We will see. ITs still way too cold here to start paint prep in my garage. For the inside, it will be painted the same but I think that I will rhino line the rear tub, seat box and front floor panels in a medium grey. Great to wash the mud and dog hair out.

FYI. Rover Accessories makes an Aux tank "kit" for the 90, but it's a bit different from the Euro tank. Basically it doesn't make you lose the passenger seat box space. Comes with it's own pump, wiring etc. and skid plate. You might lose a few of the extra gallons that the Euro tank affords, but I would almost rather have that seatbox space. The tank is designed to feed fuel into the main tank on the NAS 90.

I will check it out. Do they have any pics of it Dave?

TwisteD90
February 24th, 2004, 05:38 PM
Randy, look at your rear quarter panel and tell me your truck won't look good with that color.
I say go with Bonnati Gray, your D90 will look sweet :) I still can't believe I picked the Oslo Blue over the Bonnati Gray :(

TDI Guy
February 24th, 2004, 06:53 PM
I love that color but Painting a metalic color on a truck in pieces and then putting it together, it will never match. When painting a metalic, everything has to be painted at once together.

TwisteD90
February 25th, 2004, 10:42 AM
Now the paint is applied in several coats right? Why not painted it gray and leave the last coat, install the parts, and take it the paint shop to apply the last coating and everything should match. That's how my plan is when I paint the 110 black.

chrisvonc
February 25th, 2004, 10:45 AM
Why not just paint all the parts at the same time? Too much of a mismatch if its disassembled?

TDI Guy
February 25th, 2004, 10:50 AM
You could but then you can just edge all the parts, put it together then paint it if you are going to do it that way. The thing is, when you paint it apart like the factory, you don't have to tape and mask up stuff. No overspray on parts and no tape lines. Black, you don't have to wory about anyway... Metallics are a real PITA. I will be using a single stage PPG paint similar to an Imron. It is very durable and I coat with no clear or anything like that.. If it gets damaged, its easy to fix and match. Forget a metalic. You have to worry about air pressure, gun setup, temp, humidity. It is much more noticable in a metalic.

TDI Guy
February 25th, 2004, 10:57 AM
Chris, you should see the amount of parts when its disassembled. lol...... You would need a big booth. The other reason I am staying away from darker colors is that if you get any dents you see it alot more in a dark color. A light color is more forgiving and also the LR bodies are never straight looking as it is. You guys don't like Yellow? ???:evilfinge At least I don't have

:rainbow mud flaps planned for the truck but I do plan on the Ugly monster JEEP tires..:tounge

The paint is not a definate yet anyway till its actually in the booth.

Dude, please anything but yellow :) How about silver?

chrisvonc
February 25th, 2004, 11:25 AM
I love the AA Yellow. The previous owner must have repainted or replaced the passanger side door or front quarter because we have a definate shade differance.

TwisteD90
February 25th, 2004, 11:28 AM
Oh no, I like the AA yellow to, in fact I almost bought a yellow D90 before mine but couldn't justify paying $50K for 97 ST with 19K miles.

Randy is building a very nice custom D90 but he need to stay away for the colors that were offered for the NAS 90's and that;s it.

mpodgorski
February 25th, 2004, 11:48 AM
i would paint it a silver or bonatti grey. both colors offerd by land rover just not on the NAS defenders

zambezi silver ...737
bonatti grey ... 659

TDI Guy
February 25th, 2004, 11:48 AM
I like alot of the other LR colors but they all are metalic or the pearl colors like the Oslo blue. I love it along with the silver but what a bitch to paint. I want to stick with a standard solid color. Once its covered in mud who cares anyway:grin ... Jorge stopped by over the weekend and he said it all looks so clean and new. I replied," yeah, until the first mud hole":ohmy .. then its all down hill from there.

Randy maybe you should Dynomat before you loss access to those hard to reach spots.

Glenn_Guinto
February 25th, 2004, 04:41 PM
I'm with Jorge, look into dynomat. That is in one of my projects that I want to do to the D90 this summer, although it would be easier if my truck is in pieces like yours.

Saw your trooper (at least I thought that was you) by Vinnie's yesterday around 6:00. I was going to stop by but I had my 2 boys with me. White is a great color, just ask Jorge...LOL

February 25th, 2004, 05:06 PM
I would say don't paint it, it's just another thing to worry about. Instead strip it to bare aluminum and polish the hell out of it, talk about BLING.

Really my choice would be the bonitta grey, we almost repainted my dad's 110 that color after seeing it in England.

Hey, is it legal for a car to be polish aluminum?? Talk about blinding everyone on the street :)

TDI Guy
February 25th, 2004, 05:59 PM
I have seen a few in polished attire. Don't have to worry about scratches. Oh and Glen, that was me at the shop last night.

White has the advantage of hiding "errors" and scratches but I sure like that deep dark grey----I think it is the bonotti.....ohhhh...

Word of advice from someone that has been there---strip it down to aluminum and prime from there. Red and Yellow undercoats are the worst, but all suck. And you can't really etch the paint well in the rivets, so sometimes they flake right there. Strip it down and paint it up.

Arles blue is kick'n too!
