View Full Version : Pre load of diff bearings.

On my 110 Defender 2003 I have now the diffs wide open, installing ARB lockers both front and rear.
I have two workshop manuals, but noone is giving me the specification of how to preload the differential bearings.
This is LR axles. Not shimed, but they use nowdays 2 big nuts to adjust the backlash and preload. One nut on each side, big as the bearing.

Anyone having any idea? Free beer in Sweden for a good advice.

If it is different then this

http://www.d-90.com/tech/arb.html

then I would say not too many people on this board would know, because this is the way most of are diffs are set up. You could also try here

Been there, been everywhere. No pre-load figures. I must be the only one with this problem.

Did you try asking at the Dealership? They would have to knw as they would possibly have to fix it. I'm sure if you walked in with a six pack you could walk out with an answer!

I did. Got them from Mat Savage in GB. Hasnīt got a clue. Just selling. Hopless to be stuck here in the middle.
But I have the rear one untuched. I think I will measure this on before I change to the ARB and then preload the new bearings as tight as the original was.
You know I got two workshop manuals - no one cures this problem.
First one in universe to fit ARB lockers to LR Defender 2003 axles? Of course not - someone out there is sitting on the right answere.

I was looking at 2 of my manuals and they show the bearing nuts being torked to 90 NM. They say to tighten them until there is no play then tork them down. You are talking about the nuts that go over the bearings? The ones that you need a spiecal tool to put on and take off?
