Radiator reservior overflow

I have been noticing recently, after topping off the coolant reservior on my 95 NAS 90 a slight smell of coolant when running the heater. As you can imagine, the initial thought was a heater core, but now I am not so certain. While attempting to figure it out, I noticed coolant seeping out of the overflow hose coming off the neck of the reservior, past the cap. The only time this occurs is if I fill the coolant to the neck. Is this normal? Should I leave some air in the reservior, or fill it to the top? This seems strange. I pressure tested the coolant system (but NOT the cap) and it held pressure fine for several hours till I released it. Anyone with any clever suggestions? I will test the cap tomorrow, perhaps it has gone south? Thanks!

When you fill the overflow tank you should only go 1/2 way. That way you leave room for extra coolent to flow into the tank. If you fill it to the top it will and should overflow.:grin
