Help! Bad noise out of right rear!!

It sounds like the fender is rubbing on the tire, but the whole truck shakes with it.

Happens around 45mph. And worsens off throttle.


Started suddenly yesterday, after doing nothing unusual.

I had a new tire installed two weeks ago on that corner, but that's all I can think of.

Truck is at the shop this morning.

Any help??

Did they tighten the Wheelnuts up?

If yes, that type of noise could be a number of things.
e.g. Wheelbearing, Prop uj's, Diff etc.

I would hope its a U-Joint as they only take about 30 min to change out. Although when all of mine have died the would operate smoothly when in neutral, but the would vibrate when in gear.

Is it worse when taking corners? Typically if it is a wheel bearing it will be worse when there is more load on the wheel like when you are cornering.

It could also be as simple as one of the balancing weights fell off and you have an unbalanced tire.

I'm with Mike much cheaper & easier to replace a UJ than a wheel bearing.

I doubt it's balance weights, although they can create a hell of a vibration I haven't ever heard them make a noise.

I wouldn't be surprised if it does turn out to be wheel nuts, the shaved chimps employed by your average tyre dealer is easily distracted:rolleyes

Just got a call from the shop.

Its a sway bar bushing and mount. He said it is so far gone that it shakes like crazy and makes the noise I described.

$240 installed. How's that sound?

I wouldn't think that it would cost that much. But I have never worked on the sway bars as I don't have any..............


Just tell them to take it off.:grin The rear ones don't do to much anyway.

I run sway bar free front & rear, if you wheel your truck you'll find it articulates much better without them fitted.

Don't worry about it. What springs have you got on it?

The British trucks never used to have anti roll bars at all. They only started fitting them to appease the "lifestyle" buyers who wanted them to handle more like a car:mad

Is it fairly straight forward to remove the sway bars? Was thinking about doing that myself. How much different does the truck handle without the sway bars?

i removed my rear one in about an hour. Ended up snapping the mounting bolts though that mount it to the fuel tank skid, Haven't done the front yet. The truck handles a little differently with out the rear. Mostly it wallowed in corners at speed. but that was simple to fix slowed down for corners.

If you have stiffer springs this will reduce the amount of roll you experience on corners.
I would suggest removing the sway bars & giving it a try. If you don't like how it handles you could always refit them, or refit using quick disconnects. Then you would have the option of removing them off road.

Maz, if its broke now then drive it to see how it handles, if you are ok with it then take it off, if not then have it fixed.:grin
