Looks great, I'd love something like that with a pivot built in for the spare carrier.
Is it made of 2x4 tube? Powdercoated? How much does a typical fab welder charge per hour?
They must have liked the wood proto instead of trying to work from some guy's scratched out drawings!!
Nice work.. tell the guy to make 5 more and sell them here :)

revtor,
The tube is 1/4" 2x5 - I used a Rubberized Undercoating by Evercoat for the finish. I also used this on my sliders and it has held up really well.
I will be adding a spare tire carrier next - I've done a little research and contacted a couple guys that make quality/affordable tire carriers for Jeeps and I am pretty sure it'll work with this bumper design - I'll keep you posted.
Talk of making several and selling has come up - another bumper "prototype" will be made soon.

I am not sure who makes it, but one of our customers has a real nice Disco II bumper that he said came from some company in Australia but he couldn't remember the name. Anyway, it has two spindles (one on each end) that basically look like axle stubs. They looked like a great way to mount swing aways and if you just welded one of those onto this bumper you could probably source their spare tire mount &/or Jerry Can mounts to save some design time. Anyone know what I am talking about? The bumper looks kind of like a metal version of the orig. It even has two bumper lights like the orig. but they are slightly smaller and square instead of rounded.

Paul check this out, using a trailer stub axle/bearings as the pivot. heavy duty.
http://www.complete4x4.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=26_39&products_id=71
also the price goes down if you order a few, it would probably end up more economical if you gave the welder one of these rather than him creating one from scratch..
Another thing I think might be workable is to use something like this (toggle clamp) to do the actual latching.
http://www.goodhandinc.com/
they come in all shapes and sizes and angles/stlyes etc... I wouldn't rely on this to hold the actual weight or stress, but use it to lock something down that takes the stress..
or maybe something like this mounted vertically on the swingaway that plunges down into the bumper..
http://www.goodhandinc.com/product_series_l.php?seriesname=30250+%26+30450
who knows, there's a million ways to skin this cat. look at the jeep aftermarket, see what works the best I guess, no need to reinvent the wheel.
keep it up its looking good so far!

Revtor,
Thanks for the inf/links - I'll pass them on.
The Fabricator we are working with already has a line of bumpers for Jeeps and has been using his own - pivot setup - but the one you posted above looks slick I think I'll buy one to see how it works.
We are planning to use a 'toggle clamp" similar to the 40840 type.
Thanks for the info and questions...

Just got off the phone with the fabricator. He is 2 days away from completion of the prototype. We aggreed that he will retain the feature in the prottype for the production model. ie the recovery points will go straight thru the bumper and will be face welded and back welded. its overkill but i like the feature. It also looks like we can offer a tire carrier with the gerry cans or not.
There will be no additional holes needed to mount the bumper . The bumper will utilize the stock cross member holes and will work on a Station Wagon or a Soft Top. It may also work on a truck with dual ladders on thier roof rack.
Once we have a firm $ we will post on the for sale section. There will probaly be 8 bumpers available for sale.

can also be delivered raw fo you application.

Paul,
Is that a lift in your garage that the green 97 is on ?
Hats off to your wife for letting you have two 90's without demanding one for herself.
Bumper looks good- does it rattle @ all ? The swingout hinge looks similar if not the same as the one that Matt @ Rockware uses.

Yup a four post lift - doubles as a loading dock.
The wife is good people - she wants me to keep both D90s - I can't justify two - we'll see what happens.

THe bumper does appear to stick out quite a bit but perhaps to accomadate the receiver hitch etc. looking good, I am anxious to see the finish product. if it can be built with jerry can holders and a highlift mount Ill never need a roof rack. looks stout enough i like the corner protectors. I am wondering about the final fit and finish on a production version. Have you given any thought to pricing and availibility?

The tire does/will stick out a bit - but this is do to accomodate the "Jerry Can" holders which is not shown in the photo. On top of the frame will be two bolts to attach Hi-lift.
If folks are concerned about the tire distance - we might be able to look at providing two bumper/tire carrier options - One with the Jerry Can/Hi-lift option and maybe one with just an A frame and shorter tire distance.
As far as pricing/availibility we are still working on that.
We've ordered one of the "stub axle/bearing pivots" as suggested by revtor to see if it's worth using.
Ron and I are still discussing finish options - I'd like to keep it simple and let the end user finish the bumper as they wish - this would keep the cost down a little and get the product out the door faster.
We are meeting this week and should have most of the details worked out and a price.

On the 110, the rear fenders are longer. From the rear to the wheel well it is probably 2x longer than a D90.

The bumper is out about 3.5 inches from the rear cross member. This was done to accommodate the Gerry cans and makes it easier to get the half inch bolts started through the cross member. It looks like it sticks out because we had to accommodate the tire off set also.
We will have an option for a tire carrier and high lift only, its more like an A frame.
The bumper uses the stock bolt holes already on the NAS D90. This bumper should work with a 110 but the corner protectors would be eliminated for that application because that would be alot of metal hanging out on the rear quarters. This bumper should also work with an ExMod and the drop down tail gate.
This unit can be sold without the tire carrier if someone has an interest. Im not sure of interference with the stock tire carrier as they use the same bolt holes. But you could definetly use it with the SW.
I don’t think this bumper/carrier is for everyone. But if you are tired of door rattles and replacing door hinges on your rear SW door then this is your bumper. If you want a beefier rear bumper with corner protection then this is your bumper. If you want a place to carry Gerry cans and a high lift jack then this is your bumper.
If you want something the other kids on the block don’t have then this is your bumper.
The estimated production build is 10 units. We aren’t sure if we will do another run.
Paul and I both wanted something that was better than what we have seen in the market.
That is why this bumper is being made.
These units will be priced below the competition.
If you have the slightest interest drop Paul or I a PM or email.
My cell phone is at Rattle Snake Gutter so that number will not work for a bit. Unless a moose picks up...

ron
June 10th, 2008, 04:23 PM
All, it looks like the all in product with the gerry can brackets and high lift studs in primer will be in the $1,200 ball park plus shipping.
It will be cheaper for the tire carrier high lift option or just the bumper.
We are working with different option for the pivot point and hasp assembly which could dictate price up or down depending on which way we go.
The second unit is being built now with a differnt pivot assembly that is why it is taking some time.
If you have any questions IM or email...

Steve and Phillip, I think there will need to be some mods if you use your stock carrier as this unit uses the bottom crossmember holes. It may be doable . Ill have to look when paul gets back from shooting.

Here are some pictures of my final bumper. Unfortunately I have more time and money into it than would be feasible to sell. But you can get an idea of how it was put together.
Swing arm will accommodate a 35" tire, High Lift jack, CB antennae and 1 Gerry can.
The antenna is sideway because I can’t get in the garage when it is up. For that matter I can’t get the truck in the garage if I have 35 pounds pressure in my tires.
The 2" receiver is let into the bumper. The 2 rear recovery points go all the way thru the bumper and are face welded and the back is a solid weld (overkill). It is held in place with 10 grade 8 bolts
The bumper also has quarter panel protection that is very stout. I backed into a boulder with no movement from the quarter panel protection.
The pivot point is a 1500lb greaseable axle bearing so weight isn’t a problem. The axle rod goes all the way the bumper and is welded top and bottom (overkill)
There are some things I would change on the next one but overall I’m happy with it.
Apologize for the dirt but haven’t cleaned the truck since the Winter Romp

I'm after something slim that sits up over the x-member. I don't need a tyre carrier integrated into it but I want a 2" receiver and a couple of recovery points. Do you think custom is going to be my best bet?

Just finished my copy of the rear bumper in this thread. Wish I had beveled the corners but I forgot. It is a 1/4" thick 2x6 inch piece of steel. I have a Marsland Galvy Frame so it was already threaded in spots. It has 8 bolts holding it in place. I am going to add two more recovery points to it but I think I will use Dixon-Bates like I have on the front. They bolt on so no big deal to add them later. Just don't have the cash just now.
