“Final” Update
We're on for Mar 26-28 at Rausch Creek Offroad Park near Tremont, PA! Looks like we’ll have folks from NH, NY, NJ, PA, MD, and VA coming. A few Discos too.
Rausch Creek is smaller than Paragon; 1000 acres but the guy there said they try to keep the crowds small at about 100 trucks or so. Hopefully no ATVs or Xterras flying in front your truck! From the few people I heard who have been, it sounds like a good place.
Cost is $10/year membership per person and $25/day/truck. They say that they’ll work out some sort of pro-rated charge for half-day riding.

Don’t forget to bring maps:
http://www.rauschcreekoffroadpark.com/images/EAST.jpg
http://www.rauschcreekoffroadpark.com/images/WEST.jpg
There's a Comfort Inn that charges about $65 per night, no matter the number of guests in the room. Nearest restaurant/bar, he said, is about 10 minutes away from there though.
http://www.rauschcreekoffroadpark.com/lodging.asp
There are two camping options: http://www.rauschcreekoffroadpark.com/camping.asp
-Free at the staging area of Rausch Creek. Primative, i.e. no running water, single porta-john, fire rings
-Echo Valley Campground. $9/night/single-person tent or $18/night/family sized tent. Restaurant, water, shower, toilets, fire rings, BYOB (can coolers preferred) and there’s an ABC store a few miles away. Judy is whom I talked with.
Looks like CVC and Jorge will be at the motel and everyone else is camping.
Weather: Raining Friday, sunny on Sat/Sun http://www.weather.com/weather/local/USPA1656?from=search_city
I asked about work-for-admission and he said the way they work it is that if you do no-kidding organized trail maintenance in the morning, he'll let you ride for free in the afternoon. (I think I'll budget now for the $25.)
I'm going to take Friday off and ride on Fri, Sat, and head home on Sun. I guess we could always move over to Paragon on Sat if we think the trails are better there. It's a good backup plan.
It looks like 20-25 trucks, all together:
Ken Loy, 94 D-90, Insane trails
Tyler Kinghorn, 94 D-90, Deep water
Peter Miller, RRC, anything with mud, Sat AM arrival
Chris von Czoernig,94 D-90 and Disco/Freelander?, some trees with his door
George Parthmer, 95 D-90, to get some pics for a Bio
Jorge, D-90 looking for rocks, Sat AM arrival
Randy Kremer, In Jorge’s D-90, Anything!
Dante A. Lellos, 94 D-90, to get at least one wheel in the air
Paul Ford, Disco2, Disco huh
Trevor Griffiths and his "small group" of 15+ trucks
Mike Hippert, 94 D-90, anything with the truck top off but his own top on
Meeting place is the MX park. http://www.rauschcreekoffroadpark.com/directions.asp
Fri: Noon; Sat: 9AM; Sun 9AM
They check folks in, preferably, between 8:30 and 10:00.
For those traveling from the south (VA/PA), rendezvous en route, CB channel 10:
First meeting place we planned is exit 8 on I-83 (Glen Rock). Left at the bottom of ramp to a little clearing on the right. Hoping to depart 9ish.
Next is Manada Hill/ Hershey RTE 39 (Exit 44?) off I-81. Left off the ramp and look for a Perkins -type restaurant on the left. Hoping to depart 10.30 ish
Trevor Griffiths figures to have time to check in at Echo Valley before going up to the Park.
What do ya think??? Did I miss anything?

Wow group size is getting big. From trips I have done in the past it is best if we stay in groups of 5 and run different trails. I don't think anyone will mind if there is allot of Rovers we will just have to break off into groups so the trails don't turn into parking lots. The reason we like doing these trips is so we get too meet each other and have fun Wheeling. If 100 Rovers showed up and we only had one trail it could be a disaster, but I don't think that will happen.:grin

March 8th, 2004, 04:36 PM
Yeah, it'd be great to get folks together. We can certainly split up by experience level and truck capabilities when we get there so everyone has fun and isn't spending too much time standing around. Oh, and I hear that the rabid badger population is pretty low in PA, so probably no need to pack heat. :)

Hey if there is traffic I think you should be able to find an alternative rout that may involve 4 low. I know on the way back from 03 MAR we thought about fallowing some power-lines as a shortcut past the traffic, but one of the guys was towing a small pop-up camper with 24" tires.
So is anyone familiar with the park?

I just was wondering if it was going to be the first time for everyone or if someone new the stomping ground a little, so there would be a little less of a learning curve when we got there.
Ken, you were there, remember we passed under the highway over pass, then all traffic stopped. I said on the CB we should try the trail to the right, Jimmy said no I have a trailer but no one else disagreed with me. :grin
The trail is always faster even if it takes a couple hours more and you break a few things.:grin

Hey did everyone relize there is camping at the park and it's included in the wheeling price?
How much does it cost?
We require all persons 16 and older to become members of the park. The membership costs $10 and is good for a year from the date you join. This membership requirement applies to passengers as well as drivers. Once you are a member, the daily entrance fee for the vehicle and its driver is $25.00. Passengers are $5 each with children 15 and under free. Included in your daily fees is free primitive camping. Please note that on the day a passenger joins the park and pays the $10 annual membership, the $5 passenger fee is waived that day.

I talked with Bruce Shallis of Rausch Creek Park today. Yep, XTerras will be there on Sat/Sun and they're camping too. The campground is "primative" without water supply and a single porta-potty. "Camp C" is a bit separated from the staging area and that's where the XTerra guys reserved a few months ago. We could camp in an area adjacent to the staging area. Again, "primative", no water, single porta-potty. It does have fire rings though!
What are y'all's thoughts on Echo Valley Campground? It's only a few miles away, it'll have showers, toilets, a restaurant, and lots of good throwing sticks. I can see if they'll cut us a D-90 Source deal, too.
I'm flexible. I've slept in worst places. I just thought that camping next to the staging area with no water might not be the accomodations-of-choice.

Not sure what they've got planned, but I guess that folks now have two choices to camp, at either Echo or at Rausch Creek. Judy said she'd give us one of those famous D-90 Source deals: $9/one-man tent or $18/campsite (if you have a tent for 4, for example). Dogs are ok. Restaurant is BYOB.

I want to say thanks to everyone for helping out on the trail. Whether spotting, wrenching, or just providing the laughs. You guys make wheeling enjoyable. But most of all thanks to Ken for really getting this trip put together.
Now as for Mike, the teflon lined/JB welded bolt plugged up the hole great. He only lost 1/2 a resevoir of fluid on the almost 200 mile trip home, so I'm sure if Mike could get ahold of a computer he would like to thank Trevor, Steve and everyone else who helped get him back on the road. He decided to not chance going all the way home, so he should be settling in at the Ho Jo (Howard Johnson) right now which is right next door to a Hooters:grin So don't feel to bad for him. We will have a water pump for him in the morning and either he or I will get it installed and have him back on the road before noon tomorrow.
I also setup a gallery of pictures that Diana took over Sat. and Sun(Its uploading right now). I didn't edit out any pictures so there are some blurry/random pictures floating around. If anyone else has pics that they want posted up email them to me at pm55@njit.edu and I will post them up.

Cool pics. How'd you like rock creek?
mudrover
March 29th, 2004, 12:02 AM
We didn't run Rock Creek, we ran trail 13 which parallels it. Though I did go take a look at it and it would be crazy to run with 3 or 4 trucks and alot of spotting. Of course I think I'm gonna need atleast 33s and some HD CVs before attempting that madness. It would be cool to see Trevor or Jorge take a shot at it.

I made it home by 6 pm yesterday. THANK YOU :thumbs everyone who helped one way or another to get my weeping water-pump fixed. It was very fun all weekend, and even though I could not drive Saturday I enjoyed spotting and moving rocks. Some cool people, we will definitely have too do it again soon now my 90 is running.

I had a great time wheeling with you guys and look forward to doing it again!
LRM has asked for an article on the weekend, and I am in need of pix. They have requested digital 3.1 or better. They would like 10-12 to choose from. Now, they don't necessarily HAVE to be of my rig, but I wouldn't object!

Yes I did! Haven't had much time to look at anything yet. Somedays, I feel I have ruined a perfectly good hobby by turning it into a business! I miss the days of my dad and I working out of the 3 car garage at the house. Now I have 8500 sq ft, 9 employees and I also get to wear a dozen different "hats". C'est la vie.

CVC, Trevor C and Jorge, I sent you pics too. Did you get? Not sure that these huge files are getting through ok.
I'm going to try to make the files smaller and send more to Steve and Curran next weekend.
Trevor, Here's a good advert pic for you! :grin

I got all of them- they look great. How would I determine what megapixel count?( I'm not that familiar with digital camera technical specs)
Mike Hippert
March 31st, 2004, 04:25 PM
Camera Screen image Printed image Image Resolution = Image size at 72 PPI (pixels per inch) = Image size at 300 DPI (dots per inch)
A 640 x 480 = 22.58 cm x 16.93 cm (8.889 in. x 6.667 in.) = 5.42 cm x 4.06 cm (2.133 in. x 1.6 in.)
B 800 x 600 = 28.22 cm x 21.17 cm (11.111 in. x 8.333 in.) = 6.77 cm x 5.08 cm (2.667 in. x 2 in.)
C 1024 x 768 = 36.12 cm x 27.09 cm (14.222 in. x 10.667 in.) = 8.67 cm x 6.5 cm (3.413 in. x 2.56 in.)
D 1280 x 960 (1.3 megapixel) = 45.16 cm x 33.87 cm (17.778 in. x 13.333 in.) = 10.84 cm x 8.13 cm (4.267 in. x 3.2 in.)
E 1600 x 1200 (2.1 megapixel) = 56.44 cm x 42.33 cm (22.22 in. x 16.665 in.) = 13.55 cm x 10.16 cm (5.333 in. x 4 in.)
F 1800 x 1200 (2.3 megapixel) = 63.5 cm x 42.33 cm (25 in. x 16.665 in.) = 15.24 cm x 10.16 cm (6 in. x 4 in.)
G 2048 x 1536 (3 megapixel) = 72.25 cm x 54.19 cm (28.444 in. x 21.333 in.) = 17.34 cm x 13 cm (6.827 in. x 5.12 in.)
H 2400 x 1600 (4 megapixel) = 84.67 cm x 56.44 cm (33.333 in. x 22.22 in.) = 20.32 cm x 13.55 cm (8 in. x 5.33 in.)
so in other words 2048 x 1536 = 3 Megapixels Does this help

Yes.
But than I have to ask: Does anybody have any photos from the weekend at 3.1 or better?
Mike Hippert
March 31st, 2004, 05:37 PM
Most of the time everyone takes them at 640 x 480. You can fit more pics and they are easier to e-mail them. The only reason that they should need that high a res pic is for a full page picture like a cover shot. I would send the pics you like regardless of size, and they will show up as smaller pics in the Mag. If you have regular pictures you can scan them in at High res to get a bigger picture, but you need a high res scanner.

Trevor all of the pics Diana took are 3 megapixel pics. All of them are posted up on the website (which are scaled down). Let me know if you want me to post the good ones up on the site in full scale or do just want me to mail you a CD?

A cd would be great. There were a lot of great shots there. I'll try to convince LRM to print pics of the other Rovers besides mine! LOL.

Possibly Dumb question. Is Avatar a camera?
chrisvonc
March 31st, 2004, 06:31 PM
Don't worry about the 3.1. I sent them 75MB of over 500 pictures on a CD for the last D90 gathering at Paragon they did the article on and they came out fine in the mag and not a single one was near 3.1. 3.1 would be optimal but not to many people on the trails are shooting that high res. They want to get more pictures on their media.
Ken, and Mike, thank you I did get them all too.
Trevor, good to see you again, although if I am to start recognizing you face to face we should try to get together more than once every year and a half. LOL

Trevor, I'll put a disk into the mail for you this weekend with all 30 or so pics. Most of mine are the higher resolution.
Anyone else want low res pics by email or hi res pics by snail mail? It's about 30MB for the high res pics.
Doesn't make too much of a difference to me unless it's for a Polo or a Playboy spread (well maybe that's a poor word selection), but it might be worth checking with truck owners to make sure they don't mind being published.
