What did I do?

I can't figure out how I did this to the front axle. If you can't tell from the pic there is a dent in the casing. I have a skid plate under the axle and can't think of the last time that I was stopped by a Rock or something else in front of me. I pulled the fill plug and very shiny gear oil pored out with what looks like graphite in it. I don't get any odd noises or vibrations but I think the carrier shaved down the inside of the casing. Weird.:hmm

It's hard to tell but it is now dented in, instead of bowing out like normal.

No thats what I find to be odd. I thought I would at least hear grinding. I don't want to pull it apart as it works fine.

From the look of the picture that is not nearly deep enough to make internal contact with the housing. You are fine. Those pumpkin skins are extremly thin. You could easily dent it and never even notice.

Stupid question Mike...but is your track bar really close to your diff...I'm asking because I've seen a LR that once had the front radius arms so loose at the frame that the front end flew forward and contacted the trackbar under heavy breaking. I really doubt that this is your problem because you would definatly know it, but you might want to check and make sure everything is tight just to make sure.

It is about an inch away, and the arms look ok, at least when it was in for inspection last month they said it all looked good up front. I just can't see how or when I hit only the axle.

You probably hit a rock in one your mud hole crossing. Three things I would avoid. mud, deep water, and deep snow, as you have no clue what's under there.

WOW how thick is that?

The front part is .400" thick the sides where it slips over the stock diff cover it's .230"
And they ALMOST fit with the stock panhard rod...

Still working on that:(
