Front axle swap

I'm going to be swapping the front axle finally and need the part numbers for all the seals and such. Oh and if anyone around here wants to help when I get the parts I'll gladly pay in beer and food.

What do you need part #s for? bearings? pinion seals? o-rings? Are you keeping stock LR diff in there? (Even with a different carrier (e.g. detroit, trutrac, arb, etc..)

I'm finally getting ride of the leaking holed front axle tube. So i'm swapping everything from the current tube to the new tube. i need the parts numbers for all the seals for the front axle.

the tube? like, the whole thing that bolts to the truck? the thing that looks like this O--o--O (O's being tires, o being diff) .. There are a couple seals for the hub.. check this page (http://www.roverparts.com/ProductList.cfm?imageField.x=18&imageField.y=19&vehicle=90&category=WHEELS%2C+TIRES%2C+HUBS%2C+AXLES&Search=seal&PartNumber=) .. then you have the diff.. which should be sealed with a good sealant.. i use copper permatex personally.. then the pinion seal.. those are the main places an axle leaks.. The rear axle has 2 o-rings, not sure if the front axle has them as well..

Do you have a sewer cap diff cover on that new axle housing? If not, and you have the means, I highly recommend one. We can weld it on before assembly.

If you are swapping the third over then you don't need to mess with the pinion seal, but maybe we can get Loic's dial indicator and set you ring gear backlash while we have it out - it's quick and easy.

So just figure out what seals you need for the ends. I have never taken the front axle ends apart so can't give you any advise there. Call George at RDS and ask him what you'll need.

You only need the two paper flange seals and the diff seal (I would just use rtv silicone ie right stuff for allof it). Pull your ends out at the seven bolts at the flange (get a 14mm gear wrench) and then bolt your old ends to the new tube.

Do you have a sewer cap diff cover on that new axle housing? If not, and you have the means, I highly recommend one. We can weld it on before assembly.

No sewer cap but i do like the idea. I have directions on how to make my own just no skills or access to a welder and cutting torch. I'm picking up the tube tomorrow and will probably have everything else in a week or two.

Tony, how much do you want for it? $90 makes hacking together one's own pretty enticing but I'm interested - Keith makes good stuff.

Tyler if you want to call around for a source of those pipe ends, I'd be happy to help you put one on - just get one for me too. Don't get into a bidding war with me over Tony's though :) If you bring the housing over I am sure we can get it done in an afternoon.

$75? It's actually pretty darn nice -- the edges are pre-ground for welding, bung is tigged in, I painted it in and out. I'd hold onto it but it's just sitting there looking stupid as it undoubtedly will for some time, might as well go to a good home.

Ok I'll take it. Hang onto it for a bit longer until we cross paths. If we don't have a meet up soon, i'll come down and get it. Since I replaced my tie rod with a beefy one, the Qt guard has to go, and my cover has existing damage so it's a perfect candidate for a replacement (and needs to be done before I go wheeling again).

Of course this assumes I get my POS running reliably again :(

Ok. If you do want to do the sewer cap cover I suggest we get that done ahead of time and do the swap on a different date. Gimmie a shout when you get the housing and cap and we can work something out.
