Hi guys, it's been a while since i posted in here (for those with a good memory... i'm Jamie, from the yahoo D-90 list)
anyway, back in 2000 ish i built myself a 300Tdi 90 on a galvanised frame, which was going to be my "forever" car... but it's a bit small, and i want to have a vehicle that i can jump in and drive across europe (i'm in the UK), so needed some room, and to be able to fit some extra fuel tanks, water tank etc.
so i'm building a 110 Td5 county station wagon, i had one for my last 2 company cars, and was hoping to buy the last one to keep for myself, but the plans never came out that way.
Sooo, i got myself an ex military (but un-used) extra heavy duty frame, had it galvanized and am fitting a Td5 engine to it.
Basic spec will be:
Td5, chipped, intercooled, propane injection so good for about 200~220bhp
ARB lockers front & rear
warn 8274 up front
full external rollcage
metallic green paint.
255/85/16 BFG MT's on either alloys (if funds allow) or keep the steel Mach5's i've currently got.
extra fuel and water tank
mains 240volt inverter
and any other goodies i get along the way.
Here's a thread on LR4x4 showing the start of the project (http://forums.lr4x4.com/index.php?showtopic=17889)
I got the fuel tank fitted today as well! :)
more to come.
Adios amigos!

I'm working on a similar project here in the US and would be interested in any part sources you might have.
I have a NAS 110 that I'm rebuilding with a TD5 frame and engine. I have most of the parts for frame axles suspension. Will need new Td5 bulkhead and doors.

Hey Ze!
You are pretty close to me, maybe after your project comes along further, I can make the trip down there and we chat D90's at Aspen Mills Bakery in La Jolla.... That place is good!
Best,
Michael

Michael,
Believe it or not I've never been in there, but sure we can get together. I'm actually working on this project at a friend's house in Ramona. We're still rebuilding the axles. Next phase will be mounting axles to frame.

There's a guy in Boulder that put a Td5 in his NAS 110 (I got to drive it a couple weeks ago). He's not on this board, but I can put you in contact with him if you want.

Sounds good Jamie. I'm patiently waiting for my LR4x4 account to be approved so I can see the attachments.
Ze, what do you guys usually do for shipping large items from the UK to the US?

Trying to figure that out myself. Haven't imported any parts yet. Any suggestions would be great.
I'll post some pics soon.

I source my bits from all over really, no "one" particular place. if you want a bunch of stuff shipped over, try www.equicar.co.uk as they break a lot of late model stuff.
Or also http://www.foleyspecialistvehicles.co.uk/index2.htm and http://www.cws4x4.co.uk/

Thanks Jamie
I guess I'll have to contact some of these places and see if they are interested in dealing overseas, and at what cost. I have nothing specific I need right now other than some 2 piece middle doors though :)

I've sent a bunch of parts over for other forum members before, a LOT for Craig Reece (Hi Craig, if you're here?). it was a whole box pallet of stuff.
I'll gladly do the same for anyone else who wants stuff, you can get it sent to my place, i'll pile it up and then box it up (obviously you arrange the courrier) but if it helps, let me know.
resonable rates! (a few beers!) :)

For those who havn't got an account with LR4x4 (http://forums.lr4x4.com/index.php?act=idx), here's a couple of current pictures:
I managed to grab a few hours and get the rear tub, B pillars, side panels and roof loosely fitted last week. just go to bolt it all down properly, then i can adjust the bulkhead so that the doors fit properly, then fit the wings properly, and then i can drill all the holes in it for the rollcage.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v177/diesel_jim/HPIM4630.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v177/diesel_jim/HPIM4628.jpg
Then i can strip it all again, rub down all the panels and get them sprayed (metallic green of course!) and re-assemble it again for the final time.
then fit an engine....
and all the interior trim....
and doors....
and stereo....
and carPC....
and GPS....
and winch....
and rear ARB locker...
and air compressor....
/yawn/ bed time me thinks.... :grin

i've got the bodywork back from the spray shop (had it all shotblasted and painted in 2 pack epsom metallic green)
the engine is now running as well... sounds sweet!!

are the crossmember tabs always ( as opposed to viewable ) under the rear tub panels on a 110?

Newer Defenders have hidden tabs. I can't remember what year they made the swtich. Might have been as early as 98/99 (start of TD5) but for some reason 2002 sounds more correct to me.

yeah, t'was about 2002 ish. my old Td5 was 2001 and had the "external" tabs.
with this project i've got here, i've got an early chassis with a later (internal tab) body.... i just winged it to see if it would fit, and luckily it did (more luck than judgment i think!)
just as well, as my chassis has already been galvanised and i'm buggered if i'm going to cut and weld it now. but with landrovers "tolerances" there was enough slack to make it all fit together.
i got the rear floor, seatbox and B pillars all finished today, used nearly a tube of seal-sealer on all the panels and joins, so hopefully this will be a better-than-avarage water tight 110!
get the batteries fitted properly tomorrow, so can start her again and possibly move it under it's own steam! woohoo.

Yup, she's all but finished now... just a few little interior jobs to complete (ground anchor mouting, toolbox & jerrycan mounts, hi-lift etc. fit a fire extinguisher and mount my maglite)
Oh... and the small job of swapping the gearbox... mine is a little noisy and crunchy (although to be honest, i bought it cheap seconh hand, so can't complain really), going to fit a disco 1.2:1 transfer box at the same time.

will get some more pics posted up this evening.
The bolts are just the ones that came with the cage... M10 zinc plated, nothing special. They've not started to rust as yet ;) but being on a LR they probably will.

March 24th, 2009, 05:12 AM
Where did you get the cage?
From Evans P&P (http://www.ppcages.com/index.php?Rollcage=rollcage#comp) virtually identical to safety devices (even LR have started using them now)
Mine is a full external with an internal roll bar behind the drivers seat (pretty much identical to the NAS 110 cage really)
If you do get one.... ignore the template they send you out..... when you drill the holes in the "correct" position, they're not, and you end up with 4 M8 holes in the wrong place in your nice shiney freshly painted bodywork......:angry :angry

How does one go about purchasing such a thing, and if you don't mind me asking, what does it list for (NAS 110 style cage)?

Dan Evans makes the best cages, he made my cage for my racer, just email them and they can send you a kit, also the fit directly to your vehicle.
He's one of the chaps who drove a 110 accross the bearing sea.
Follow-up Post:
I can supply take out defender and discovery TD5 engines with looms and ecus for export.

I did all my ordering via email (Kim is the woman who deals with that), then a final couple of calls with my credit card.
couldn't have been easier.
My cage (which is more or less an NAS one), with the internal hoop, and with (my addition) of a couple of extra antenna mounts on the rear hoop, plus the "delux" kit (Which is the rubber feet where the cage touches the bodywork and slightly different shaped feet to accomodate this) was about £1700 (can't find the goddam receipt now!) including delivery (that was the best part of £150).. mind you, it's 'kin heavy!:grin
