X-Ray Diffraction (XRD)

Not that this will interest most of you probably but I thought I would throw it out there. I am a geology graduate student and I have been running a lot of samples through our XRD. If any of you have samples (minerals/rocks((somtimes)) and you want to find out what they are I am more than happy to run them for you. Any donations of parts would be great but not required.

Can it also do any time of carbon dating as well? I went ou to eastern OR, last summer and visited the Newberry Volcanic area and there is a lava dike there. We went in about a mile underground and I picked up a small piece of magma that had, obviously been there since the "day".

I was just curious to see how old it might really be.
