Looking at wheels options for a D-90.

For the ExMOD I'd like to go with tubeless steel wheels and not LR alloys.


For those that have "been there - done that" what wheels would you recommend and what would you stay away from?

Also would you go with 16 or 15 sized wheels?
Seems like there are more tire options with 15s - I have not bought tires yet - so my options are open.

Also if you have a set of used wheels let me know.

Another popular size, 255/85-16 is a bit narrower at about 10ish "

Then there's the 265/75, a little shorter and less of a burden on the drivetrail..
My thoughts on tire size have been changing a lot recently, I have 35X12.50-15's on my Disco. For what I've been doing trails wise in recent years makes me wonder if I need such a big power sapping tire. I'm also thinking I like the 16" wheel too, just a bit less sidewall flex.

I like the 285/75/16s too - it's what I have on my 97 D90.
For the exmod I am looking to go a bit bigger - maybe 35s.

For this post I am actually looking for recommendations on the wheels/Rims.
Like American Racing Equipment, Wolfe Wheels, etc...

Well DUH! Maybe I should read better.... I'm starting to really like 16's but you're right there are fewer sizes by brand available in tires.. It seems that the selection is getting better though.

Most 15in tires are C load range. 16in tires are D or E load range as a general rule.

For 16's I like the look of the NAS 110 wheels.

I have stock series 15" wheels on my RRC that are OK if you run a narrow tire.

Don't spring for the extra cost on the silver NATO (wolf) wheels from Atlantic British. It appears that someone used a cheap rattle can without any prep to the ones I bought.

If you choose those, buy the black and rough them up and paint them yourself.

I think you should have 4 sets of wheels for your vehicle, as well as a couple different side panels, metal half cab and full canvas top. Everytime you change your wheels or body style you feel like you have a new truck. :cool:

I'm also trying to figure out if I should look for wheels with a different back setting and avoid potential need for spacers.

Rusty works for me ;) although I think the series wheels would be too thin.

The truck currently has Michelin 9.00 R16 XL http://www.militarytires.com/ which the site says is a 36" tire.
The tires are really rugged - but not right for what I want.

Well I have
285/75 SSRs on 7x16" but Racer alloys (nice tire shame about the reduced turning radius when in tight spots!)



Wolf steel wheels IMHO best looking rim ever (Walker Evans rims apart :cool: ),shame about the 6.5" width only and backspacing



cheap 8-spokes (now painted black and ready for Staun int. beadlocks), nice classic look and nice backspacing,and great 7" width "fits-most-my-tires-sizes" :)

I've got the standard military steel wheel with XZL 7.50x16's on an ex-mod 110. I just acquired 5 wolf wheels with new 7.50x16 Goodyear G90's to replace those. I'm curious how the G90's will work on the road.
