'97 st with 25000 miles. When engine is warm and at idle, sometimes I hear a whining sound (not from the passenger seat) that is clearly belt, pulley, tensioner related. When I give it some gas it goes away and may or may not come back. Water pump looks dry and she runs cool.

What symptoms does a failing water pump show? Anyone else have something similar?

TIA

The water pumps usually start to leak.
The Rover V8 does have a lot of belt noise normally in my experience of them.

Ron - If it's coming from the rear (driver's side) it's your fuel pump. I have the same thing going on. I thought it was a belt when I first started hearing it.

Ron, I had the same thing going on with mine except It was the a/c compressor. I cut the belt and it went away.

The noise seems to be coming from the front, but I'll check the fuel pump next time I hear it.

That sound comes and goes and sounds like a turbine, should I check the water pump? nothing is leaking, is there a lubricant I can spray the hoses with?

Get a can of belt ease from auto parts store. Doesn't last but will provide a test.
