This is what I have in my Forward Control 101:
2.5L NA Diesel + LT77 + LT230.
CAN I do this:
Defender 3.9L + Disco I automatic transmission + LT230
or
SHOULD I do this:
Defender 3.9L + LT77 + LT230.

Probably neither because the ZF auto and LT77 V8 are both much longer than the stock 101 LT95 or the 4 banger LT77

Are the "4 banger LT77" and the "LT 77 V8" different? It currently has an LT77 in it (probably from an early MOD 90)

Yes, the V8 LT77 is much longer. 6-8in.

Greg,
Using the transfercase mounts as a reference point- do you have much room for a longer engine going forward ? Seems to me since most of these came with a v8 & lt95 you should be able to fit a v8 lt77 setup in there.

The 101 FC Lt95 is much shorter than the one in a 110 or Range Rover.

Thanks for the help Ron.
So length is the issue.
But can I mate the 3.9L to the LT77 I have in the 101 now (assuming it is a 4 banger LT77).
And, can I mate the Defender 3.9L to the ZF auto from a Disco I?

I think you can mate a short shaft four banger LT77 to a V8 by using a series V8 adaptor plate. If it were me, I would just source a 101 FC LT95. Roadside Rob has one I do believe. Have him regear it to range rover ratios.

So then I would have the 3.9L + LT95 + LT230.
What would regearing it accomplish?

You would have a 3.9efi to LT95. Regearing makes your highway speed better.

I got it, the LT95 has the transfer case built-in.
Thanks for the help.
Follow-up Post:
What is the status of Roadside Rob? Where is he located?
He doesn't come around these parts much anymore.

Search Southwest Rover.com
I think you could make the auto box work without to much drama. I know I could. 4.2 would be better as well. And injected.
Or Chevy v-8 to 101 transmission. I have the adapter plate in stock. Have Rob build up his transmission/transfer case for it.

Seems like there are as many options as there are opinions.
I have access to a 3.9L so that will be the most convenient engine for me. Ultimately, I would like to run an automatic transmission and have found a ZF that is "close".
Nothing comes up for southwest rovers, the site looks like it is down.
