First - not sure whether leafers are welcome here ? If not, just let me know, and I'll slink off quietly...
I am relocating from Malaysia to the US (NY - somewhere in Westchester Co) in May and will be taking my recently turned 25 year old Series III 88" Safari Station Wagon (that came with me from Dubai on the last move).
It was suggested over on Pirate4x4.com that there was a group of LR folks from the NY/NJ area over here that head out on a fairly regular basis and I just wanted to touch base - also to find out if there are any recommendations on a LR/Series friendly/knowledgeable garage in the area.
Any info or advice most welcome.
Cheers,
The Tonka:

Thanks Mike - I'll drop him a line when I get to NY.
What's the story on offroading in the US ? The last two countries that I have lived in have been "open range". In UAE and Oman, if there wasn't a fence around it, you could drive anywhere in desert or mountains without worry. In Malaysia, if it's a trail and isn't posted by the government as a no-go area, you can drive it.
I know in the UK they have this nightmare with greenlanes. What's the story in the US ?

It's kinda in between the two. In some states its great in some it sucks. Allot depends on the laws in the state like in NH I can pretty much wheel anything that is on a map and not marked "privet property keep out". I am not too sure about NY but as you may have seen we are planning on a trip to PA to do some wheeling in a Offroading park, you have to pay to enter but there are plenty of trails at all levels. What part of NY are you moving too?

Richard,
I live in Rockland County which is right across from Westchester County. Let me know when you're in the US and I'll setup a trail run in the area.
We try to do a trail run once a month and have a shop day at least once a month also. You're welcome to join us anytime.
Welcome to the US and look forward to wheeling' with you.

Mike, Gianpaulo,
Thanks very much for the info and the offers of help. We will be house-hunting next week and I fairly sure we will end up in coastal Westchester, although we are going to look in the City as well. Not sure if our budget runs to a brownstone on the Park with a three-car garage! .....
I'm arriving in May, but my truck probably won't arrive in-country until June. Look forward to hitting the trails.
