Help me put together a Spring/Lift Measurement Database…
I’m sure many of you are familiar with this ‘lift measurement database (http://www.discoweb.org/liftmeasurement/index.htm)’ that Discoweb put together (my old Disco is actually one of the entries on it). I want to try to put together something similar for the Defender. There are pretty decent resources out there for the specifications of OME springs, including listings of current OME Springs on EE’s website (https://www.expeditionexchange.com/ome/indexsprings.htm), and on ‘jbarge’s (http://members.shaw.ca/jbarge/springinfo.html)’ website, which has specs on some out of production and Land Rover OEM springs.
But what I want to do is put together a database of the measurements from the lower spring seat to the upper spring seat for the different springs when fitted to Defenders. We need someone with a relatively low mileage stock 90 (with springs as close to OEM condition as possible) to get us some baseline numbers as well, and we need everyone to report factors that affect the lift amount, such as winch bumpers, winches (wire or synthetic rope), recovery gear stored in the back, etc. (make and models of bumpers and winches, and weight estimates of gear stored in the back will help people figure out weight differences).
So, I need everyone’s help to go out and park their Defender on a level surface, and measure the distance between the upper and lower spring seats (http://www.discoweb.org/liftmeasurement/front.jpg) on both the driver's and passenger's sides front and rear locations. Please note if you have staggered height springs (typical to OME sets), and if you are using a trim packer or other spacer (between the spring and seat, not above or below the spring seat), as well as details about your Defender’s equipment level.
I will try to compile the information into a spreadsheet, and see if Chris will be gracious enough to host it the D-90 Source tech section. I’ll start…
’95 D-90, Safari Gard front bumper/skid plate w/ Warn XD-9000i winch, Mantec Sliders, stock rear bumper removed and replaced with Safari Gard Bumper corners, rear of Defender Empty, ľ tank of fuel, Safari Gard Stage III suspension (circa 1998).
~> OME 753 springs in the front. 18.1 DS/ 17.7 PS free, 180 lbs/in (I believe I have to check) 13.25” DS, 13” PS
~> OME 759 springs in the rear. 18.1 DS/ 17.7 PS free, 260-300 lbs/in progressive, 15” DS, 14.75” PS

Also wanted to note that these appear to be the specs for the stock springs, if anyone knows differently, please feel free to set me straight. But we just need measurements to go with them...
