I wonder when the MOD crew cab pick-up will come on the market. That is a sweet truck. What is the symbol that is on most of the trucks the < ?

Why buy MOD, when you can buy this...

Why MOD?

The cool factor can't be beat. Think about Janney's 90. It is cool just because it is ex-MOD.

Also, MOD generally has the beef.

Very true. Janney's 90 is even cooler because it has the MOD camo paint, original.

Not to mention:

1. Rolling Chassis: 20k USD (no doors, interior, etc)
------------ or -----------------------
2. ex-MOD Defenders: 2-6k GBP

Beer & time you need to complete either project: Priceless

The "<" sign is a visual recognition that says "Don't shoot! I'm a good guy." My understanding is that is it typically painted in a special paint that shows up on infra-red gun sights like those used on planes and tanks.

This may be a dumb question, but how do you get an ex-mod defender into the States? The oldest ones are 1985, and I thought the rule was 25yrs.

By the way I'm not a customs officer.

Here are some pics of a Defender that got shot up in Iraq.

Here's the link to more, and much bigger/closeups:

http://media.militaryphotos.net/photos/album55

In one of them you can see a shot right through the Defender badge on the bonnet. One of the others shows a shot right through the door, and another of that same shot going into the seat base. If it wasn't for those extra six inches, someone would have taken a shot in the thigh...

I hate seeing pictures of wolf's shot up. That could have been one less truck that will be auctioned off.

That 90 is not a 1980 (the first 90's became available to the public in 85), it's an 84 according to it's VIN and if that is a 2.5NA diesel (which came with that truck) he's dreaming that it gets 30mpg. My 110 is lucky to get 23mpg. Other than that the truck looks pretty nice.

id go out on a limb and say that 90 on ebay was an 86 model purely by the military reg number he listed ... thats a UK military reg number tho so either its got a good history or its an odd one

Yeah, maybe not. My Dad just spoke to a buddy that's a fellow Vietnam-era SEAL whose been working in Iraq. He said it's much more stressful than jungle combat with the VC...he said the guy had that shellshocked look...and he did three tours in the 60's/70's. Not nearly as enjoyable as we might think...

I'm going out on limb to say that "military" Land Rover on ebay (see page 1) is not quite what it claims to be. For one it says 1980 body with 91 engine. That it is not - 90s did not start till 84 and Defenders till 89. TDi engines came in in 91 I think. The body and interior is 91 Defender. As by the looks of it is the drive train. Nothing "1980" about it...except the VIN plate maybe.......Hummer outperforming claims are somewhat optimistic, H2s yes, but but H1s....depends on conditions and terrain. The towing rating is simply because in UK they use a different rating system. A standard Disco has an 8,000 lbs rating in Uk but way less here. Just a function of weight of pulling vehicle. No way a Defender will our pull a Hummer.

There is a cross post here that I already posted in but most likely it is a '91. And it is not a TDi, it is a Di. They do get every bit of 30MPG, problem is they produce a whopping 65 B.H.P, and a lot of smoke. Oh, and it can and does tow that much, it has more to do with rigidity of the frame than anything else. Of course, good luck pulling that much at more than 20 MPH. And come on, it will outperform a hummer in most terrain, the Hummer just plain has too much body on it.

KeithD
September 9th, 2004, 09:30 AM
Seen the other thread now. Isnt it an iDi engine? The 8000 lbs is also for braked trailers only I think too. As for outperforming Hummers, on open ground/mud bogs I doubt it - Hummer has more ground clearance, more torque, bigger tires. Of course on many trails it is far too fat and just won't fit. The H1 also has hardly any room in it. I remember LR in Solihull telling me that the Americans realised in the Gulf that the Defender 110 had greater carrying capacity, used a fraction of the fuel, and was just as able to cross the terrain as a Hummer. H2s are crap of course!

While not in Iraq, here are some cool military photos of Defenders...although I read that the ones with all the armament are called "WMIK"s (what's that, anyway?) They look like 110's to me.

WMIK = Weapons Mount Instalation Kit "wimik" it's all the framework that the guns & spare wheels are hung off of.

Hi guys. I frequent this board almost daily but rarely post. However, I could not resist responding to this thread. I am a US Army helicopter pilot currently serving in Afghanistan. The US Defenders here are holding up very well and serving with distinction. The Rovers play a major role in combat operations and work hard for the boys in the fight. I'll try to have a few pics approved for publication through Intelligence and post a few thumbnails for you all to see.

Ford did not even bid on the new military contract. It went to Pinzgauer. I have seen the new replacement for the Hummer called the "Flyer" It has 3 models but is smaller and lighter than the hummer. Very cool with a buggy inspired suspension. You will most likely never see another new Defender in any army. bummer.

Yeah, bummer. I'm sure Ford will keep the name because of the heritage, but probably the only thing it will be defending anymore is Starbucks.

I saw a lot of posts on the military boards talking about the D-90s...lamenting the slow speeds, but biggest of all, was the lack of armor, and inability to handle the addition of armor very well due to the previous lack of power...and maybe some complications with trying to weld iron onto aluminum.

Christ, what do they want??? Speed and protection? Crazy, I tell ya! Crazy. ;)

LR nineties are hardly used, mainly 110 or 130s.
The 110 CrewCab Pickup and the 130 CrewCab mentioned at the beginning are regular LR models...
Their main advantage of mil. Defender/Wolfs is definetly the flexibility to adapt them quickly for different purposes.
With the WMIK a 110 can be changed from a GS (General Service) Hard/Softtop to HS (High Spec.) "gunship" within 3-4 hours:
www.adrianstomcat.co.uk/wmik.htm (http://www.adrianstomcat.co.uk/wmik.htm)
They are available in 90", 110", 127", 130", 147" with many different bodies (ambulance, gs, hardtop, softtop, armoured, royal marine deep wading and winterized versions...)
Offroad it is definitively better than a Hummer 1 and 2. It's lighter, cheaper (fuel) and very versatile. They can be run with aircraft fuel.
The Wolfs mainly have a modified 300tdi engine. A few have the Td5 engine and the Aussies have the 3.9l in their Perenties.
The LR Wolf has a stronger frame and a higher loading capacity. A Safety devices internal rollcage/low profile rollcage is often fitted, too.
They also have another Air Intake system and the Spare wheel is mounted at the side of the vehicle. A basket is often mounted on the bonnet (anyone wants one?) and the rear door.
You can buy 300tdi defenders (not Wolfs, but mil. spec.) still in Turkey via www.otokar.com.tr (http://www.otokar.com.tr/) .
The only comparable vehicle I know is this:
The new Canadian Mercedes G and the german ksk G....
