Attack of the Pine Barrens Mud Monster!

Andy (Lesandjes), some Disco friends (some of you know them, Eric Choy, Jarek "The Great Polish explorer" Maras, Gordie aka Red Rover) and I went out to Pine Barrens this past Sunday and had a blast! Andy just got his 110 the other week and decided to break it in at Pine Barrens, and I couldn't be happier. We got there around noon and found some water and mud pits right away. Everything was going great as our recoveries were going quickly and smoothly. Then around 6pm when we decided to leave Pines, and that’s when all hell broke loose. We came across a 200-yard field of pure mud. At one point all 5 trucks were stuck and we had to play Tetris with them to see which ones we could winch off and use as anchors. At one point we had a Jarek's Disco, Andy's 110, my 90 tied together as anchors while Eric had a 100 foot winch line combined with 3 recovery straps hooked to my bumper and then tied to Eric’s bumper to Gordie’s Husky 10,000. It was some true Camel Trophy style shit. It took us around 2 hours to get out of this field. It was one of the best wheeling days so far :)

Guess the Pine Barrens are wet enough to recover quickly from that abuse...Depending on the water level, the areas that are grassy are completly under water as well, so as careful as you try to be, you'll still be going over some sort of vegetation. We always stick to established trails and not erode the banks any further. But yeah, it also recovers extremely quickly there... its amazing seeing areas over time, they are always changing.

There are marked trails, and then the trails open up into larger open play areas. We would never go off the trails there, even though it looks like were we totally tearing up the place, we actually weren't harming it at all. :)

yeah, been there a bunch of times with Ben S. But we can never seem to find the same spots that others do. I know it's kind of a free for all place and the swamp will easily cover the damage y'all have wrought. But I do wonder what the people in charge of our access would think if they happened on that field the day after you guys tore it up.

It will flood again and cover it all up, then dry up, then possibly catch on fire. It is basially large wet lands so the base terrain changes each week. The tracks that you see in the field weren't any of our tracks at all. we were trying to go straight out of there and didn't fool around. those tracks are actually from all the Unimogs that go through there on a regular basis. Our tires do nothing compared to the Moggers tire tracks.

There is a good trail head at Atsion Ranger Station on Route 206 in Shamong Township, NJ. If you want to go, let us know, there are miles and miles of public trails.

Dan, I didn't appreciate how tall your truck is until I saw it in person at Winter Romp. It's enormous. 35's and 3" RTE?

He knows that place like the back of his hand which is good, because you could become very lost in there.

I just put the soft top back on this weekend and the rear raised up about a half inch. it is on 35s with 3" RTE. I kind of want to put it back down to 2" RTE because I have about an extra 1/2 inch with my rubber isolators.

I wanna get some dirt on my 83 RR, I'm running w/h.d. OME's and 34'' TSL's. Needs a bit more gear, but I'll take 1 trip at time.

Yeah, you're definitely more than welcome to join us, we're laying a bit low over the next 2 months though in preparation for the National Rally in Moab, UT in September... but we generally go out to Pineys and Rausch Creek a few times a month. Your 83 sounds nice, definitely want to check it out.

Took my literally months to get all the mud out of the car. Then all the crap in the bearings and the rust.. When I was down there I came across some guys in yotas who were burried over their hoods. Let me know next time, I'll scout the trails on a bike for ya! By the way, did you notice the fires? I was on some tighter trails than you get a 90 down and we came across a bunch of brush fires. Came around another corner and almost got hit by a ranger. We chatted a bit and he said the fires were from lightening strikes and there were a bunch of trucks out trying to put them out.

If my wife's 93 LWB holds up, I'll put it on a trailer and tow it w/ the 93. Also got wait till my 2yo getts older.

Anyway definitly down w/ the pines, I'll just check the posts.

I bought the 83( was a private import) through LRX from Vegas, it was a desert rat.... rust free for now. Anytime you wanna see it let me know.

Wheels bearings, starter motors anything under the truck just gets water and sand in it. its kind of like putting your truck in the ocean for an hour and then taking it out, rinse and repeat. :)

You guys know about waxoyl rite..... expensive, but worth a couple of years if you off-road.

My wife's 93 LWB, I did it 4 years ago.... when I get under it I can srape it off the frame w/ my fingernail and it's soft and oily. Worth the $18.something a can.

Mud breaks off much easier.
