I am freaking out a little bit. I just got my defender today & when I switch from 1st to 2nd gear there is a bit of a grind. Any suggestions?

Check the fluid and/or drain and put some Redline MTL in the trans.

Mine does that too. Just let the RPMs fall below 2000 before you shift and you'll be fine. You can nurse this for a long time. You can always double clutch between 1 and 2 as well.

Some people say that the MTL will remedy this.

Pharmacists believe that you can fix problems with drugs. Surgeons believe you can only fix things with a scalpel. Me, I'm a cutter.

Oh, this post would best be answered in the Looking for help?Post here section. Also try using the search function. It's great and you can generally get an answer in an instant.

Let me answer your next post: Yes, they all clunk like that. The slack in the drivetrain is designed to be there. If yours doesn't, then it's likely something is wrong.

Thanks guys. I will look into this transmission oil. I knew right away that the defender would be a lot rougher than my jeep- & I like it! Please keep the suggestions coming!

Welcome!

Replace your oil cooler lines if they haven't been done. Search here to find why. Or keep a couple skewers and a pack of marsh mallows on board for the occasion.

Hey David,

Some guys here are just too sarcastic, it really gets to me too ;)

Seriously though, show us your new rig! Many converts here too, you're in good company. Post a pic in the Misc Chat and say "Hey".

Just time it. My red one the second synchro was worn and I just timed it. I believe the new owner is doing the same. It has been four years or so . . . plus whatever time the guy I bought it from put on it.
