Someone tried to steal my D-90!!!

Well.... I was walking out to my 90 to go to work this morning, and noticed oddly that my passenger door was opened. Upon opening it I found that someone had pulled off the auto shifter cover . Apparently they were trying to get it in gear and out of park. Nothing in the car was missing, so I can only assume that they were infact trying to take the whole truck! As it is, I am looking at installing a security system. Anybody here have any suggestions on a good system?? :mad

I grew up in the region that at one time was known as "the car crime capital of Europe", so we were always paranoid about our cars. I use an immobiliser, separate alarm and some sort of physical device either on the steering or on the pedals. A big F'in dog would also be good...

There has been a spate of Defenders getting nicked (brit-lish for stolen) in the UK as modern cars are difficult to get into. Seems like a lot of them get shipped out to Eastern Europe.

I like the Full Metal Jacket from Footloose4x4 (http://www.footloose4x4.com/products/security/fullMetalJacket.htm) but it's 85 quid and I've not seen it in the US.

Cheap alarms are next to worthless. I'd invest in a quality one and also look at an immobiliser that works on the fuel pump, ignition and starter.

There are some nice passive immobilisers out there, where you need a transponder on the key-fob to start.

Also, at the risk of sounding teacher-like, be careful where you park (under lights at night, in the garage, etc.). I always work on the assumption that someone is going to steal it. A little bit of healthy paranoia!

I hope they don't try again...

My home security system of choice. Worked last month when my dog scared the hell out of some guy at my back door. He started cussing. Then started to run when he heard me choke the shotgun.....

I'll answer that since that's my dog in the photo. This was a personal protection demo that I did for potential client. Specifically, a carjack scenario. The fact is, if the bad guy sees a dog ahead of time, he will move on to some other car, if he doesn't, chances are he will be so startled, he won't have a chance to shoot the dog before you start driving away, dragging him down the road. The point is, it buys you time and gives you several options. Bottom line, it most probably saves your life, or at least your vehicle. Sure beats having nothing.

How about a simple battery cutoff switch mounted on the seatbox? Look on ebay for the hella units (the ebay market is flooded with them as they're removed from all new Rangies before delivery).

I've talked to Q about his dog and he assured me that the dog doesn't have an aggressive bone in his body and would at most lick a thief. It makes a good point though and that is, while harmless, the visual deterrent alone is enormous!

Phil, Q's dog was licking everyone, I never seen a rotwiler (spl) that nice, but I still won't get near his truck with that dog in there :) BTW, I'm still interested in one of your dog and the kids keep bugging about when they are going to get one but I need to get my feet back on the ground since my life been like a roller coaster for the past few months.

I was reading about a product in Europe that sits between the master and slave of the clutch with a turn of a key it disables the clutch. I'm thinking about getting it and plumbing it into the brakes. I'll post a link as soon as I find it in the magazine.

Usually, I take her swimming. :) She won't let me get in too deep without trying to pull me out. It took me a while to train her to leave me alone while fly fishing. Instincts are a powerful thing...

It's the original 94 soft top. You can make it fit but you have to remove the snaps and add the slide thingy.

My wife won't let me get another big dog and I want to keep her so I put in a Clifford radar sensing alarm. Works great especially when I have the roof off. I didn't bother with the kill switch as I figure the alarm is enough of a deterrent.
