probally the ECU? I am not sure, tehre is the OBD display also its like maybe more pager sized, well on my 95 it is................

It is bigger than the amp, the truck has an alarm, maybe it was the brain? any ideas?

If it's mounted to the floor, it's your ECU.

That's your "Rough Road Detection" ECU. It receives signals from the wheel speed sensors, checks for different wheel speeds to determine if the rig is off road to prevent your ECM from logging false misfires.

hmm.... I only thought the Disco's had that garbage? What wheel sensors does a D-90 have?

I agree with Phillip, I don't think NAS 90s have wheel speed sensors. But I am pretty sure the 97s have some kind of Rough Road Detection that tied into the ECU. Does the box have any markings on it, my guess is it is the Main ECU if its a 97.

No, I think it is the RRD ECU. It is listed in my parts manual. Plus, what's that thing in the engine bay? That's the ECU.

I sure as heck have both in my 97.

Ok. At the risk of being severely ridiculed, I'll tell you FOR SURE the box under the seat is not the ECU. The ECU is in the engine compartment on the 97. I am not sure exactly what the box is under the seat, however.

The reason I know this is because I bought an RPI chip from Rover Connections. Part of the deal was for me to send my ECU to California so that the new chip could be installed. I asked someone, who is very knowledgeable with Rovers, where the ECU was. I was told under the passenger seat. I looked, found this box Jan is asking about and just knew it was the ECU. So I took it out and sent it to California.

A few days later I got a call from the technician doing my chip install and he said he had no idea what I had sent him but it was not the ECU. It looks very similar in size, etc. But not the ECU. He told me where the ECU was actually located, which was in the engine compartment. With him on the phone, I went out and immediately located it. I took it out and sent it to him.

I got both back in the mail a week later and installed both back in the truck. What was supposed to be about a week downtime turned into two weeks.

I still don't know what that thing is under the seat but it is definitely not the ECU

I am very happy with it. There was a long discussion about it when I made this change. If I knew how to link back to an old thread I would do it for you. But just do a search and you will find it.

The main computer for the motor is under the hood (with the mapping EPROM chip, etc., that Rick changed). As mentioned by Will, technically this is called the Electronic Control Module, so ECM for short. It's in the big white box on the port side of the motor bay. For some reason, peopl elike to call this generically the "ECU" when in fact there are several ECUs that each serve separate purposes.
