View Full Version : Project Zambesi - Td5 NAS 110
surf110
June 14th, 2008, 01:35 AM
Have been working on this for almost a year.
NAS 110 with Td5 frame and engine.
Most Td5 parts came from low miles wrecked 110 Hi-cap.
Got new TD5 frame because Hi-cap was T-boned.
New bulkhead, new doors, new paint, new seat covers. The list goes on...
Check out the link:

No. Believe it or not, it was from San Francisco. Was parked outside, close to the ocean, under a tree from new. The bulkhead was shot but everything else was in good shape.

Very nice. What kind of paint are you using to paint the block and diff housings?
This picture explains why my 95 door catches don't hold in the out position - I don't have the the rod!

I grew up on Lake street, just above the Presidio in San Francisco and remember seeing that old girl around. I've always been a 90 guy but appreciate the bigger brother 110's. I think she was my first exposure to the 110. I'm so glad to see her in the state she's in now! Very good choices on all accounts, paint, power, etc. and meticulous at that. Your garage must be an certified outpost factory! Can't wait to see more!

Nice project. I notice you have a couple pics of my Defender in the gallery. It must have been when Jim Newman had it a couple of months ago. I'd like to see that thing when its finished.
One more thing, who do you use for powdercoating?

Yes. I took those shots because I liked the rear view mirror and the Bazooka subwoofer. Your D90 is the one that had the supercharger removed. Correct?
I use ECP Powder Coating in El Cajon.

Now it's getting folded into your SF NAS110?

It's looking very smart.
'tis a good feeling when you fire the lump up for the first time isn't it? The Td5 sounds good as well, doesn't it?
funnily enough, i recorded my exhaust today to see what the turbo whistle sounds like (i've got a standard non cat downpipe, standard 110 middle silencer, and a straight out stainless V8 sports tail section i used to have on an old 110)
sounds pretty good! (http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v177/diesel_jim/?action=view¤t=turbowhistle.flv)
I've got to ask... you fitted a panel in the rear tub to get to the fuel pump... what did you use for the actual removable piece? thats just what i want to do to mine. i suppose any round piece of steel or ali would do, but yours looks like it's got a recess punched in it?
cheers

Yes. It was great hearing that turbo whine.
I have a stainless exhaust from a V8 that I'm thinking about using with the Td5 non cat down pipe.
I was looking at Td5 Alive the other day and their exhaust looks really good. Pricey.
Is it easy to find Td5 exhausts over there?
I used a Range Rover Classic fuel pump cover. Just go to a scrap yard and get one. That fuel pump access already saved me the hassle of dropping the fuel tank. We had the fuel lines crossed and it was getting very low fuel pressure. Checked the diagram plugged them correclty and it started right up.
I miss seeing your 110 project on lr4x4. Do you have a place where I can see what you've done lately?
diesel_jim
September 7th, 2008, 04:25 PM
Yes, the Td5 alive stuff looks good, but like you say, pricey.
a good friend of mine works at landrover on the engine development department, and he worked on the Td5, and hence know it inside out.
he says that one of the best value for money systems, is a non cat downpipe, the middle silencer "removal" pipe (like one of these (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/land-rover-defender-110-td5-mid-box-replacement-exhaust_W0QQitemZ170257056015QQcmdZViewItem?hash=i tem170257056015&_trkparms=39%3A1%7C66%3A2%7C65%3A1%7C240%3A1318&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14) and a plain rear system.
The pipes on a Td5 are 2.5", so is the Td5 alive one, so unless he has really smooth curves i don't think you'll gain that much.
But getting Td5 stuff here is easy. on ebay (like the link above) there's plenty. go to UK ebay "Td5 exhaust" (http://motors.shop.ebay.co.uk/items/_W0QQ_dmptZUKQ5fCarsPartsQ5fVehiclesQ5fCarPartsQ5f SMQQ_sopZ1?_nkw=td5+exhaust&_sacat=31348&_fromfsb=0&_trksid=m270.l1313)
I was at a breakers yard today and they had a rangie in there! damn! i'll go back tomorrow and get it!
I removed my build up from the LR4x4 as there's been a lot of defender thefts in the UK, and i figured i was "advertising" mine a bit too much.
I'll PM you some photo's and an update.

Are your fenders euro specs that you cut holes in for the roll cage?
You can buy the fender skins off the shelf for Td5/300Tdi (with the air intake hole on the RH side) and cut-outs for the rollcage (bear in mind they'll have the Td5 shaped hole for the turn-light repeaters too)
RH wing ASB710480 (used to be ALR7974)
LH wing ASB710490 (used to be ALR7975) both are £91.40 UKP (each)
These are used on the G4 and defender "black" special editions (plus numerous others i suspect with the front cage on)

December 9th, 2008, 12:54 PM
Ah that makes things easier if you are switching a NAS90 to a diesel and you don't want to use a snorkle. Certainly easier to and cleaner to use td5 turn light repeaters than to cut air intake hole in the NAS fender. Well easier for most.

I can take some but I'm out of town until the 15th. Send me a reminder and I'll take some detailed shots.
It uses 4 roll cage bolts so no welding or drilling to the roll cage. There's a clamp that screws on the top bar and holds the can handle in place. Very simple. I'll take photos and you can have any weld shop do it for you.

I recently moved from down town San Diego and had seen your Defender across from the restaurant "Neighborhood" and I must say I could not have been more surprised to see a 110 of that caliber.

Hi Craig. Thanks for the kind comments. I didn't have any issues. Just went to the DMV, got a quick inspection and they gave me the diesel title. Search the forum for other people's experience. If it not a NAS truck, I think it is a lot harder to do.
