1994 Land Rover Defender 90, Red #509. Three tops, Badger ½ cab canvas top (excellent condition), 97 full top which is in medium to poor condition (2 2-3 inch seems rips, and a 2-3 inch light-bulb burn that needs to be repaired), and a bikini top (this is not part of the badger ½ cab).
I have had this vehicle since November 2004 and it has been used as a daily driver. With exception of some issues with starting and universal joints the vehicle has been working well. The previous owner did a few upgrades to the vehicle and I just maintained it from that point forward. I haven’t really driven the vehicle since October 07. I had planned on keeping the vehicle and was starting to get it ready for some trips and fun; I recently returned to school and the fun trips just aren’t going to happen in the near future. The vehicle has 81,020 miles on it, has a clean title, and a clean record.
The closest this vehicle has come to being on a trail since I have owned it was the blizzard in 04 and a couple sandy trails near my house in NC. I have driven it from Raleigh to Chicago 4 times, Raleigh to TN 1 time, Raleigh to Orlando 2 times and Raleigh to Pensacola 1 time.
When the vehicle arrived to me I had some problems with it starting. Plugs were changed, rotor, etc… Two different mechanics, 4 visits later and it kept doing it (I posted these issues on this site). The last time it happened I was in Pensacola alone; it took me about 5 minutes to figure out the problem. The end of the wire that goes from the cap to the start solenoid was missing (the wire was just jammed in the hole). I am not a mechanic but I was fairly disappointed that my mechanic couldn’t figure that out!!! I ordered new cables from Land Rover and a new starter solenoid just in-case and it has worked ever since.
I had some humming from the rear end when it arrived and it after my first trip to Chicago and the blizzard the pinion gear in the rear end broke. I had it towed to NC where my mechanic placed a Detroit Tru-Trac in the rear end. No problem after that.
I have the receipts from the previous owner who had most of the work done at Land Rover in Utah.
He upgraded the following:
R380 Transmission
2 inch lift springs and shocks.
Miscellaneous repairs, speedo, exhaust manifold etc…
Rhino lined the cab and undercarriage (the undercarriage looks like they just sprayed it). The interior is rhino lined red and is in pretty good condition.
I upgraded or changed the following:
Optima Yellow Top summer 06
ARB winch bumper which replaced the existing brush guard and bumper
Safari Guard Rock Sliders
Tru-Trac was installed in the rear when the pinion broke
Clutch master cylinder (November 06)
The front right wheel has been almost completely rebuilt twice. Once in 06 and then rebuilt in May 07 with seals bearings etc… and the driver side had the bearings replaced at the same time.
Jan 05; I replaced the exhaust system and cats. There is a cat rattling again (I replaced with stock cat system from Land Rover, waste of money; I highly suggest you use after markets cats). It has a Flow Master 3 Chamber muffler which sounds great. It is quieter at lower RPMS and opens up quite nicely.
In 05 I also put a Mean Green starter in it.
K&N dirty air filter, just add water and it will NOT be dirty.
I installed a volt gauge and an oil pressure gauge in. The volt gauge works but the oil pressure gauge was never hooked up. I had plans of replacing all the oils lines and doing that in the process. It just didn’t happen. The gauges do light up etc… You should replace the oil lines anyway and just do it all at once.
The windshield roll bar, the fender covers, tail light covers were removed, stripped, treated and powder coated gloss black; as seen in the pictures the 8 inch section that is welded to the cab bar needs to be painted (this does show the difference between the stock color and the gloss black powder coat). I had the hood vents custom made; a tribal dragon design water cut into ¼ aluminum and powder coated gloss black. The vehicle had the stock two piece rusted roof rack when I received it. I removed it, took it to a welder and had second set of roof racks fabricated to ALMOST match the originals. The second set is just under 1 ½ inches lower to the roof than the stock racks. I did this so I could park it in the garage in NC. The fabricated set was treated and powder coated gloss black. I removed the existing stock mounting brackets and they were stripped, treated and powder coated gloss black.
I removed the windshield dohickiemabobs and they were stripped, treated and powder coated red. I don’t know what these are called; there is a picture.
I just added a custom rear driveshaft and universals that was made by suburban drive-line here in the Chicago area. I have the old piece of shit also which you can have free of charge.
The tachometer and wipers were not working the last time I drove the vehicle so I took it to a mechanic. He screwed me over but they are now working (blown fuse, replaced with my own fuse, and charged me 100.00).
Potential issues with the truck:
The foam in the seat bottoms needs to be replaced (other than that the seats are in fairly good condition)
Rear skid plate is rusted and needs to be replaced
Cats as explained earlier
The winch was working great up until it was put into the new bumper. I assume he hooked up the cables incorrectly because it doesn’t work now. I used it a couple times prior to him placing it in the new bumper in Jan 07 and it worked great.
The AC works great but is disconnected. The pulley bearing was going out and sounded like crap. I ordered the new pulleys from Atlantic British and the AC pulley was not the right pulley. Apparently, there are different AC units that were installed etc… I have the pulley and the arm; it needs new bearings. I never followed up on this with Atlantic British due to work etc… When the pulley is in, the AC worked great with the ½ cab, ice cold!!!
Paint and rust issues; it is a 1994 so there is some of both. It could be worse; I have tried to show all spots in the photos. The undercarriage was rhino-lined so there shouldn’t be that bad but there are some areas that need treating (I didn’t do any of that). The back corners have some issues and there are a couple minor scrapes and scuffs that are documented by photos. The 3rd brake light bar needs works.
It has been driveway kept since Jan 07 and could use a nice wax and buff. The photos were taken this morning June 22, 2008.
$25,000.00 OBO is the price and you are completely responsible for shipping, handling, etc… The vehicle is sold as is.
Please let me know if you have any questions. I will leave this hear for a week and then I will start posting it on other sites etc… if you would like to contact me personally, email ripp2002@operamail.com or call 217-454-9904.
Thanks,
Larry
I have more photos than this that I can email etc... Just didnt want to upload 60 pictures on the site :)
