Just putting out a 'feeler' for a r380 manual tranny that came off a '95, slightly used (36,571 miles). It worked just fine when removed on 8/30/99. I should have it soon (within the month of July). Will anyone be interested? I'll check back once I get my hands on it.

I may be interested depending on the price!

Me, me, me - I really need one for my Disco 1, so I can get the original out and refurb/upgrade it. I'll come and pick it up!

They are very different between the DI and the D90. I have a disco R380 that is in good shape other than the second synchro (which is really not that bad), if you need a disco core.

Thanks! I did know about the 'long stick' 'short stick' versions, but had hoped to swap the various shift assemblies over. From what I read at the Ashcroft Trans site, I don't remember there being much - but then I might be having a senior moment.

Yes, I'm def. interested in a Disco 1 R380 and would like to know what you're asking for it.........picked up, too!

I have to agree with Ron,
I tried (or actually I had a shop try) swapping a Disco R380 into a Defender, shifter is in the wrong spot and it was a disaster. Dean (or you can try Evon) at CaliforniaRovers in Encinitas, CA has a Disco R380 that is supposedly in good shape that I am sure he would be willing to part with.
Hope this helps,
Clay

lrcb40
Thanks, Clay. I really need to find one. My old Rangey's on its last legs and the Disco is ripe for upgrading with the stuff I have on the RRC. But it's not ging anywhere until the box is fixed......it rattles like a rock in a can......

I should have the transmission by July 15 or 16. As far as I know it is for a 90. If anyone knows how to tell the difference between and 90 and Disco 1 r380 please let me know and I will confirm once I get it. (Although the difference is probably pretty straight forward) Here are a couple pictures and I will post more once I receive it if requested. I can move it for $1000 shipped.

are the authority on this box. They know their stuff. Check out the website, they have vids etc. I'm checking in with them to see if conversion is possible.

CDeWan
Wes,
Not sure if you have the time to call around but some of the larger shops that advertise on the web I am sure have done the R380 to automatic conversion for the defenders owners who prefer not to shift. I got mine from WestCoast Rovers in Irvine which they had pulled an R380 out of a 110 to convert to a auto, so we know at some point the original LT77 in the 110 took a crap was replace with an R380 and then converted to an auto. If we can keep the thread current I am sure someone has a R380 that wants/needs the thing out of their garage :).

If you come and retrieve it from my house, you can have it for $260 in $20 bills.

midturtle
well, it looks like the r380 has a lt230 mated to it. if this is the case I can sell them together or seperate. there will i'm not sure a a price until i see them. anyone care to make a fair offer?

lrcb40
Dave Ashcroft has confirmed that there are some internal mods necessary to make a Defender R380 into a Disco R380, not just the remote modification. So I'll pass on anything but a pucker Disco gearbox, thanks!

Now if I still had my D90............

CDeWan
Andy - try Dean at Californiarover in encinitas,ca as he should have you a Disco gearbox.

lrcb40
I did, and he does, and I bought it, too!

Thanks very much for the heads up. Dean's a nice guy too.

Man, I wish I still had my '97 D90 SW.........

midturtle
Ok, I just received them. Ends up I have a R380 and a LT230 (connected). Both seem to be in good condition. I'll take some pictures tonight and post them tomorrow. Make me an offer, I need to move them. The transfer case has around 70K and the manual transmission has just over 36K miles.

ECR
I'll give $350 for the Defender R380 gearbox with bellhousing. Don't need the LT230 though.
Email me if you want to talk. :)

midturtle
Here they are, I still need to clean off the housing.

paulb
So Wes, about how much does that thing weigh?

I understand it's about #150 without bellhousing.

Andy

It can be shipped UPS ground oversized if you pull the bellhousing. I built a crate to send an LT77 to Rob and I have shipped a bunch of LT230s in a box.

midturtle
Paul, I would guess that it definitely weighs all of 150lbs, but shouldn't be over 200lbs...but then again I don't have a scale.

cabell
Wes,
What ratio is your Tcase? 1.2?

LRover
PM sent...

midturtle
Cabell, as far as I know the ration is 1.2. I do not know if it was modified by a previous owner.

LRover, I haven't seen a PM

So how much do you want for the set up?

I'll take it if the price isn't nutz.

CDeWan
ooo. just to add a bit of useless knowledge I had a freind call I think UPS's heavy freight division or (somenting like that) and the shipping was a lot cheaper. I have not checked it out myself so please don't qoute me but it could be a more economical way to send the unit.

I found another unit so I'm out...

midturtle
still have it...anyone? it would make a great anniversary present, child first birthday present, great early christmas gift, dog toy, or even a magnificent additional to you dining room furniture set!

lrcb40
Thanks to everyone who responded. My R380 (Disco) has arrived and my new clutch too (still cheaper to buy/ship from the UK (Paddock Spares) and thanks to Dean out in CA for a clean trans. I used USHIP and found a carrier that way. No problems at all!

So, tomorrow, armed with my trusty workshop manual, I'm going to start in on getting the thing fitted!

Andy

anuctoo
Still available? My R380 just decided it doesn't like to shift.

ajh
I would be interested as long as it'll mate up to a 200TDI and isn't sold yet.

midturtle
Sorry, it isn't sold yet, but I have committed it to someone. There is another r380 on the site from nashvillerover
