View Full Version : d90 bogging & hesitating off idle

Hey everyone, my truck started bogging off idle at a stop light today. I'm having to rev it to a couple grand to keep it from lurching. It seems fine at the higher revs though- but when starting the truck I have to give it gas. If I push the pedal to the floor it will bog down. Anyone have any experience with this? There are no fault codes.
thanks

Check your spark-plug connections at both ends of the wires.

Alright now it won't start! It sounds like it wants to catch here and there but won't fire up. Any ideas now?
thanks

So, the starter spins and you can get the motor to crank at least 120 rpm.
Have you checked for spark?
And are you getting fuel?

I'm gonna get cracking on it in a few hours- try to get an idea of what's wrong with it this time.
Thanks mike

Cool, let us know what you find, I just did some searching on the subject ( to try and help) and found allot of unresolved threads.

I had a similar problem. Turned out my distributor had moved less than a quarter inch. I used a timing light to fix the problem. Find the mark for 5 deg. BTDC on the bell housing, connect the timing light, turn engine on and turned distributor until 5 deg. mark and the mark on the block line up. This worked for me. Could also be a bad distributor cap or rotor, check both of these.

Also check out your vacuum advance hose.

I'm wondering if it is distributer related. How do I check the vac advance? The hose appears to be good with no leaks when I hold one end closed I can feel the suction from the plenum. Does this sound like an air gap issue? Other than changing the cap and rotor I don't know how to work on a distributor- or I have never worked on one in the past. Another thing is that I hear a whistling noise coming from the rear of the engine. It's definately not a belt- and it has become worse over the past couple of months. Now it's getting to the point where it doesn't want to start at all. I could really use some help with this pos. I don't trust any mechanic down here anyway- and other than the dealer there is only one. There appears to be sufficient fuel pressure but I haven't pressure tested it as of yet.
thanks

The distributor is rotated to establish the spark timing in relation to the cylinder movement. It can be advanced and retarded to establish different explosion management and so forth. I have a disti-less 97 motor, so I haven't had to do much with it.
Get someone to pull that page out of the service book for you...

Thanks for the help guys! It ended up being a timing issue- the nut that holds the distributer tight loosened up. The distributer had moved all the way back- retarding the timing. I advanced it and set it.
Thanks
