Wanted to share my latest project, in case anyone has been thinking of doing something like this. I learned alot in the design and build, but very pleased with the outcome. I've posted the summary in Expedition Portal.

You dog, that actually looks really good. That looks better than some of the stuff they guys over at EE have done, and they take that stuff pretty seriously.

I especially like how you took the picture with the engine running so you can see the diesel shake on the shifter knob.

Very nice. Can you elaborate more on the cooling? Did you add holes to the tuffy for ventilation? If you have stuff in the console I'm not sure it would stay cool.

I want to do this, but currently am a bit concerned about the display holding up to the weather in my ST, as well as people being attracted to it (theft). So even though I'm about to add a mud console to my ST, I think I'm goint to get one of those retracting touch screens. This setup will be perfect for my 110 though!

No, actually, a VIC20 with a tape drive running through a 7" b/w crt would be the hot set up for Janey.

I have an 80mm and 40mm fan installed in the lower box of the tuffy (both smart fans that vary their speed based on temp). One blows in, other blows out. Both are mounted on the tuffy walls (either side) and I did in fact use my home pc desktop case to make a ventilation hole template, that I drilled out for the fans. My tuffy still has alcohol marker all over it from the measurements for everything that I need to clean off with alchohol. The motherboard I chose is one of the best mini-ITX boards on the market (Jetway Via C7 processor) for low temp and power consumption. It's over 100 deg here in charlotte now, and with both fans blowing, the board averages 40-50C, which is right in normal range. The fans can hardly be heard.

I used the tuffy box to ruggedized the hardware and keep it high up off the floor. The amp is a marine amp under the tuffy. further refinement is to use marine grade accessores to further allow ruggedizing/water resistance of the hardware in the tuffy. TBD.

That is cool as hell! You should send the pictures to MUD, everyone should be able to see what a modernized Defender should look like.

Yes it is. It is the Xenarc 700 TSV, which is a 5 wire (much more reliable) 7" touchscreen. Xenarc is THE name for mobile touchscreens. http://www.xenarc.com/product/700tsv.html

The front end software is open source called Roadrunner. The navigation software made by INav is specifically designed for touchscreen interface (http://www.inavcorp.com/) with full moving map and turn-by-turn directions.
