wipers overrun

On the downstroke both front wipers overrun and stop past the bottom windscreen strip. The driver's one actually hits the wiper spray nozzle which is irritating.

On the upstroke they go where they're supposed to so it's not simply a matter of refitting on the splines.

if it were mine I would mess around with thier alignment on the splines. maybe there is some slack or not enough slack. I have never heard of this.

Mine do the same thing. Either they hardly go down when they are moving slow, or when moving fast they go way to far down. I can't figure it out myself.

Same thing happens to mine exactly. Even replaced the motor and it still happens.

Are you all running 12" wipers? I know mine overrun with 13" blades.

I just checked and they're both 13's. Is 12 standard?

I'm getting about 30 degrees of play on the passenger one. Can you refit new splines?

get some rain-X, yeah about the splines has anyone messed with them mine are a little under the weather also...

No, I'll pass on the rain-x. You know you can get the same effect from a potato? Just cut it in half and wipe it on.

Anyway, I need to get two chips filled in and I've heard using rain-x doesn't make for good adhesion.

Mine did it only on the drivers side. I had to bring the truck into the dealer for some warranty repairs and mentioned it to them. They said no problem and fixed it. All they did as far as I know is realign them on the splines and tighten. Not really sure. Check with your dealer.

As I noted, on the upswing the driver's side goes to the edge of the moulding so realigning it would cause an overrrun on the upswing.

I suspect it is wear in the sline area - either on the blade or the mechanism itself. Hopefully it is a small replaceable part.

I am having the same prob. The spline is actually loose on the spindle thingy. The allen screw is rusted in place so I can't tighten the spline up. Has anyone drilled this out? If so how did you repair the hold and get a new allen screw in there?

I drilled my screws out, retapped the hole to a slightly larger screw and bought an allen scrwew at the local hardware store. Piece of cake. Even if you don't have the right size tap, to buy one that size is only a couple bucks.

I should have read the rain-x post closer about the potato--my neighbor came outside this morning as I was rubbing potato chips all over my windscreen--she ran inside and locked her door. Now my truck smells like chips and the neighborhood dogs are peeing all over my tires and licking my fenders. I think I will stick with rain-x.

Same problem . . . only on drivers side and the Set screw is tight.

Seems the shaft has some play and even if move on spline it still over runs (in opposite direction).

off topic kinda but I was on I-40 going home in the rain and my passenger side washer fell off at the little splined stub :eek:

I'm not sure if mine are the same as NAS but mine did the same thing and I just realigned the wiper arms on the spline and it was better. It still overruns on one side but that's because I run 13" wipers. If NAS wiper motors are the same as mine then there will always be a small amount of play because the splined shafts are turned by a spring moving back and forth. If anyone wants I can probably post a photo, I have a spare kicking around.

Just drill out the hole slightly larger than the threads, then tap the new piece. Should take less than 30 minutes.

Bringing this thread back from the dead as my truck has the same issue.
i adjsuted them on the spline its marginally better still a lot of slack - the Slack is coming from the spline movement on the wiper shaft - the shaft seems to be stable.

Plan (i'll update as the parts arrive)

1) Bought new wiper arms, splines, & Blades (all OEM)
2) will have to drill out the splines since the set srews are rusted solid (filled) - plan to toss these
3) i want to replace the set screws with SS ones if i can source them locally
3a) i was going to rotate them 90 degrees so the set screw is point down but this would prevent drilling them out in the future if needed.

we'll see if it that fixes it until the next time.
