Three guys get a hotel room at a rate of 30 bucks. They each throw in 10 bucks and head up to the room.
the front desk clerk realizes the room is on special for 25 dollars, so he calls the bell hop over to refund the 3 guys the 5 bucks. On the way up to the room, the bell hop realizes he can't split 5 dollars by three so he pockets 2 for his troubles and pays each guy 1 dollar. Now each guy has paid 9 bucks for the room.
9 times 3 equals 27,plus the 2 bucks the bell hop pocketed equals 29. What happend to the other dollar?

Its not a question of where is the missing dollar, but where are all 30 dollars. The clerk has 25, the guys have 3, and the bell hop has 2 - all 30 are accounted for. The question has been re-phrased to me misleading.

Easier said, 9 times 3 equal 27. "Minus" the 2 dollar tip = $25 the actual cost of the room.
The tip is part of the 27 and can't be added onto what each person spent
