Awesome! So what color are you going to paint your 90?

TDI Guy
April 20th, 2004, 02:01 PM
thanks guys. Well Yousef, do you want to know what color my neighbors house is today or the color of my truck? Well it looks like even after the poll on the site for color choices I will be going with the Zambezi Silver. I think it will look cool with the black soft top. Different too. I should have everything ready for paint in about 2 weeks. More priming today then have to wet sand everything. LOTS OF PARTS:mad

TDI Guy

lol... ok enough Chris. It was together but now apart again and so on and so on...... I promise the next time I bolt the rear tub and bulkhead on, it will be painted and put on for good.

JimC
April 20th, 2004, 09:36 PM
How is the paint gonna look on the exposed sides of the bulkhead where you've had it gavanized? Are you just doing a lot of filling/sanding there, or are you letting the texture shine through the finish. I realize that all galvy jobs are not created equal with regards to smoothness of finish, but I havent seen yours, and I've been wondering ever since i saw pix of your galvy bulkhead.

TwisteD90

Mike Hippert

Over spray from the primer. If you look at the first pic you can see a cloud of spray paint in his garage.

TDI Guy
April 21st, 2004, 09:51 AM
Yes and into my neighbors window... lol thats what I ment Mike. Sorry Yousef for being unclear. I'm sure you will be happy with my color choice.
As for my galv. job, it was berrfect and was not textured but very smooth. I did go over the outer exposed parts with a quick 80grit though. you would never know.

Randy, looks great, can't wait to see it muddy. You know this means that I have to start to get my junk together to compete w/ you big boys. I just mounted some 38.5/14.5/15 SXs on the chassis and I'm hoping to get everything done by the end of the summer. I have a LONG list of stuff to still get done: narrow body, wiring, gauges, custom panels, rollcage/bumpers and every other little thing. Yeah, your definatly way ahead, so don't let Chris get you down, one step back and two steps forward :grin

TwisteD90

Is that you priming the tub??? Damn you have a nice ass, sorry couldn't resist :)

thanks randy!!! i did get it. i have roll up doors, i think it will be close to the same job. i have taken the doors off and taken every thing off the door except for the skin, thats next. where did you get your skins? i dont think george has them(rds) and i think brit pac said around $125 a skin . that doesnt sound too bad

TDI Guy
April 23rd, 2004, 08:20 AM
Matt, I just did my rollup window doors yesterday. ITs the same thing just a bit more of a PITA. More edges to work on. Check out a few other UK suppliers for different prices on the skins

mattdh
April 25th, 2004, 01:51 PM
randy-do you have any pics of the finished hammered edges? i would like to see how they turned out. i took the skin off of one door yesterday and am doing the other today, then i will galv the frames hopefully next week. did you do the back door?do you have the full back door?or what are yourr plans for that?

TDI Guy
April 25th, 2004, 03:11 PM
Matt, I do not have a full back door. I have a tailgate but you would do it the same way. As for the edges, I think they are in the pics I sent you. They are not totally smooth since I used a body hammer. If you can get a hold of a door skin installer you can have them looking even better. I know www.eastwood.com sells the stuff but they are expensive. Keep me posted. Also do be afraid to use extra seem sealer...

TDI Guy
April 25th, 2004, 03:33 PM

Try rubbing alcohol (isopropyl alcohol). That should do the trick for both removing the "gunk" and prepping the site for application.

Berty
June 8th, 2004, 11:33 AM
12 gallons (UK)

dmarchand
June 8th, 2004, 11:55 AM
Thanks Brett. This is a 10 gallon tank BWoverland.com is selling. Rhino lined on the outside and double walled steel on the base (with internal baffles). And doesn't force you to remove the storage in your passenger seat.

I'm glad to hear that with it, I'm only missing 2 gallons over the euro tank...

Randy, are you going with a NAS fuel tank as well?

TDI Guy

Well duh..... :grin

Who would put gas in a side saddle tank? Actually the tank would be very well protected. With the slider, and if you were overly concerned, adding another skid plate. The thing would be more bullet proof than the rear tank is.

But I'm only putting diesel or maybe veggie oil in it...

I wish... I have been so busy that things are moving slower then I thought. I hope to have it on the road late fall. It won't be finished but will be road worthy.

I have a full NAS ST cage for it and also have a full euro hard top with a POE rear window setup.

Chris, I dig what you did with the rims. My buddy with a DII did the same and I've been considering it. What did you use for brand on them? Powder Coat or good ole Rustoleum? I was thinking rustoleum since touch up is a spray can away.

Chris Cox
October 29th, 2004, 10:03 AM
I just bought some semi-gloss paint from Napa, rustoleum I think, and a can of clear. I cleaned the rims, rubbed them down with fine sandpaper, and sprayed. Looks pretty good, and is cheap to repair. I think it cost me less than $10 for everything.

Chris

Got the front end on. Had to really chop the front panel to fit the Allard intercooler, but it will all be hidden by the grill and winch. Put my new rockware bumper on to test fit today. jvelador

Thanks...

The Bonnati Gray is one of my favorite colors for for a Defender, Lara or no Lara. One of the LR mags has a Series III painted in this color, with a Defender front end. Nice...

Having said that, the galvanized chassis underneath & rear crossmember look more 'natural' underneath a Zambezi Silver, as it does on Randy's.

I figure since I'm about to start on a frame swap and have to take it apart, I may as well paint it. I'll post pics of my progress. My guess is that it's going to take several years. We'll see what else inspires me.

Randy, looks great! Do you think that you will need to trim the fender flares to clear the 35's? I trimmed a pair of rears that I have, took 2" off. Looks like they won't rub now. I haven't installed the fronts, and was wondering about trimming them. They are more expensive than the rears, so i don't want to trim them and regret it (I already have another uncut of rears in case I decide not to trim). Where'd you get the idea to paint your door tops? :>)

Chris

TDI Guy
March 21st, 2005, 08:17 PM
I might trim them. I don't care if they rub a bit though. Mike are yours trimmed? You have the same tires. As for the door tops, they are not painted right now. They are bare aluminum. I will paint them silver though. I like the way they look better.

Mike Hippert
March 21st, 2005, 08:20 PM

Rancho 99012 14" shocks all around Rym 3" springs all the way around and Custom Rover tracks Exo front shock mounts. I am also running a SG 3-link system up front.

The tank breaths again.. Finally had time to get it back on the road yesterday after motor failure on the way to MAR last year. Ended up cracking a valve which scored the #4 cylinder and destroying the head.
I ended up taking the engine out, stripping it down to a short block and having it bored .030 to clean up the damage and even though it only had 11k on it, we installed new bearings. Then I put the engine back together with all new gaskets and timing belt. Next came a new complete cylinder head to complete the engine build.
While it was still apart, I figured why not throw some more cash to the wind and install a custom aluminum Rad/intercooler setup with frame from Allisport.
Yesterday I installed my new bonnet latch and horn before buttoning things up.
So after sitting in pieces for 9 months and having the injectors and IP in a plastic bag on my shelf, I hooked up the fuel lines, primed the fuel pump about 10 times to get the bubbles out of the filter and turned the key. Started right up and settled down in less then a minute.
With the new intercooler I also turned the fueling up a 1/4 turn on the plunger and she runs like a champ once again.
