NAS d-90 from scratch. What would that cost me to build (all new parts etc) if I did the work myself? Is that legal? Has anyone done this?

Good luck finding the parts! Take outer wings. It took an LRNA dealer six months to find the right ones. Turns out they aren't being made with any regularity anymore. Tubs for the NAS are most likely Unobtanium. SD was in bankruptcy and appears to be back per ECR, but they don't seem inclined to make anymore cages. So those are going to be very pricey to source if at all. One partial set is on Ebay for 3.5k.

George at RDS can get you a 300 tdi. He had a deal a long time ago for a 300, R380 and LT230 for 15-17k.

At the end of the day, I'd say it'd be much more feasible and cheaper to actually buy a complete truck.

If you can find the parts I'm sure it sould be done. A 1974 Jaguar E-Type was just built from spare parts.

Depends on the state. You can build a car from parts in IL. They will issue title and VIN if it meets state requirements.

No different than building a hot rod from parts.

Could you not import a log book (registration document) from the UK....um, i meant "buy a complete vehicles and ship it over"....ahem" and then "rebuild" it to NAS90 spec?

Why would the Feds be involved at all? I can buy all the parts needed from George who would have imported them legally to begin with as parts in the states.

You may have to prove your parts are DoT compliant at the state level but that wouldn't be difficult at all if you use a V-8.

Doubt it. If you have a complete car then it has to be on the list to get in. If you brought an 84 in then no problem.

Ren Ching is indeed right. My apologies for my ignorance! I was completely wrong. I Re-read the DOT rules.

Paraphrased:
No car can be imported as parts and reassembled and registered as road worthy.
Kit car vendors are registered with the DOT as such.

So that answers wether you can assemble one from scratch. Not legally.

That was the entire drive train. R-380, LT230 and the motor. Add the exchange rate at the time and it wasn't a bad deal at all....

Search the bbs. 300tdis aren't what I would call a cheap motor.

EwSDOT has nothing to do with the V8 (they are the safety agency)- that would be one of the other two Govt agencys concerned, the EPA.

A V5 by itself is worthless without the supporting import docs.
