200 Tdi oil filter equivalence ...

I'm looking for the equivalence for the oil filter of a 200Tdi that will be more readily available on the road every where in North America.

Numbers for Napa, Fram, Wix ...

I'm also interested in figuring this out, but looking at the filter location (just got my 200 TDI and been tearing down the vehicle for 2 months) I was thinking that it might be sensible to fit a remote filter and fit the HP-3001 to it vs the stock filter so I can run the better and easily available K&N filters.

I was also thinking that a centrifugal filter could also be fitted at the same time given the amount of soot that builds up in the oil in a diesel it seems like a good idea in general but I haven't found a specific model that would be suitable yet (nor looked too hard yet, been focusing on sandblasting everything back to steel lately :) )

I pretty sure that it's the same filter as for the V8. Napa P/N is 1068.

OEM P/N is ERR3340, which is also the P/N for the V8.

Oh, if that's the case I have a spare HP-3001 sitting in the garage and will try to spin it on before I yank the engine tomorrow just to confirm.

The K&N oil filter is NOT worth a damn.

If you look on the box for the HP-3001 it tells you some common cross reference numbers for the application, put down the K&N and pick one of those up (Purolator Pureone works well) and be on your way.

Why the bad blood with the K&N?

No bad blood, it just does not filter as well as say the Purolator higher end filter's 99%. I cant seem to find the K&N data to back this up, but I was schooled on this not too long ago when I was about to buy a K&N oil filter for my truck. Just now I wore Google out trying to find some filtration specs on a K&N oil filter, none to be found- but plenty of pages touting the handy dandy nut on the bottom of the can...

Plus, the Purolator is made in USA. AFAIK, K&N is made in Taiwan? And the Purolator is cheaper, which is good for me at least.

The K&N is a "Champion Labs" filter "1999 version" and it is one of the "recommended" filters from the study.

This filter is made by Champion Labs using what I call their "performance" design instead of the "Ecore". It uses a synthetic fiber element that can filter out very small particles and has a high holding capacity. It is rated by the manufacturer at just under the Purolator Pure One as far as filtering capability, but is still very much above conventional paper filters. It also has a very strong construction to withstand high pressure spikes during start-up. Given the choice between the Purolator Pure One and the Mobil 1 filters, I would choose the Mobil 1 because of the restriction concerns of the Pure One. However, as with all Mobil 1 products, expect to pay 2 - 3 times as much for this filter. I have seen this filter sold at Auto Zone and K-mart and used them a few times, but I feel they are not worth the money in the end.
