I was changing the front brake pads today and one of the wiper seal retainers popped out. It had been bent up a bit so I was unable to get it back in place.

Is replacement as simple as pressing a new one back over the wiper seal or is it a more involved process? Also, any worries driving it about with this retainer missing until I can get a replacement?

Thanks!

Hi Dan, replace the retainer ASAP as it protects the inner seal, any crap in there and the seal is toast.

you can use the piston to guide the retainer back in place just tap it into place gently

Just did my RRC yesterday. There is a gasket kit with rings available from LR. I found it easiest to place a flat piece of metal over the ring with the upper seal in the ring and then use a pair of channel locks to gently press the flat bar until the retaining ring snaps into place. Make sure the rings are not bent or you will never get them straight. Also having a few extra around if a good idea till you get the hang of it. Another tip is use compressed air to pop the pistons out of the caliper.

Thanks for the replies... I guess the parts are sold as a kit:

They are on the way, but probably won't get to it until Friday... I hope nothing blows up in the meantime.

Should I be able to tap the retainer back in with the pad simply removed or do I need to pull the caliper?

I would pull the cal
I do it this way;
clean the cal [wire brush & pick]
pop out the cups
pull the seals
clean things up ie cups grooves
install the inner seal the right way
wipe the cup with some cal lube
put the outer seal & retainer on the cup [near the outside edge]
install cup
press in the wiper & retainer with pvc fitting I had laying around
inspect to make sure the seal is in correctly
also you will get deatailed instructions in the box
