I know this is a pretty basic (aka LAME) question, but where is the fill level on the coolant expansion tank? The tank on my 110 is black, and on top is the warning "fill coolant to level when cold". For the life of me I can not see any level indicator on the tank. I have been filling it about half way, but wonder what is correct.
This is for a 300Tdi and the expansion tank came with the engine.
Thanks

Aren't the black tanks prone for failure? Or am I just dreaming that up?

Yes the black ones are prone to failure.

There are many 300Tdi engines (Defenders and Discoveries) in Argentina with black coolant expansion tanks and I have never heard about a problem with them. Just that you have to unscrew the cap to check the level.
I always considered the joint (?) located about halfway up to be the level but not 100% sure.
I know have a translucent Td5 coolant expansion tank for my 2.8 VGT engine and I admit it is more practical.
Cheers,

the tank on my 97 D-90 has a line or ridge around the resorvoir which is the fill level. It is about 1/4 way up the tank from the bottom. You need to allow alot of room for expansion.
