Temp Gauge

So my temp gauge only works intermittently. I had it checked out and had a "failure to duplicate". No wiring issues. It will go from a normal temp reading to cold all of the sudden, and my check engine light comes on showing that my temp gauge is out of range. Has anyone ever had this problem?

Sounds more like a sender issue than the gauge itself. Never worked on a '97, so I don't know if it has separate senders for the ECU and the gauge like a '94 does.
