Main Gearbox oil

1995 D90 with 37K on the clock. I'm getting bored waiting for spring and decided it was a good time to change ALL my fluids. Does anybody really change the main gearbox fluid? how bout the transfer case? I've been talking to some friends of mine with manual transmissions and the jury is still out. Just wondering what the consensus was on the forum.

Just changed mine with royal purple syncromax in the trans and max gear in the t-case and diffs...

Consensus is Redline MTL* for the main gearbox and 75w90 or 80w90 for the t-case. Change every 30k.

*there was a thread on MTL v. royal purple about six months ago for opinions. Mine is the royal purple is not the right spec.

Help me out, I'm an Amsoil dealer. Should I use the ATF (the manual specs ATF dextron IID) or should I be using their syncromesh?

Neither.

You need MTL. It's spec is between ATF and gearlube and is what is currently recommended by Land Rover.

book says 5.6 pints....or 2.8 quarts.....wait transfer gearbox??? I was talking about the main gearbox (transmission)

I use Moble 1 synthetic in my ZF auto box & Royal Purple gear oil in all other holes.

Manual transmission gearbox takes between 2-3 quarts.

MTL in the R-380 and I use Mobil One 75/90 in the LT230. Redline MTL is amazing.

Slight hijack but what the heck do you use to take the fill plug out of an R-380? Looks like a large torx bit.

It is a torx. I always forget the size, T55 I think.

hey ron, I was jsut looking at the Rave for the D90......Did I order enough oil? Says main gearbox is 9.5 quarts. and transfer case is 4.8 pnts? what gives??

Manual 2.X quarts is enough. I have done it 4 times and never needed more.
