I thought I had this all figured out until the the last Axel thread.
1985 90 with rear drums
Got a 1997 Disco donor truck.
Questions
1) Will the rear axle(calipers and all) work , with the stock front?

2) Will the front axle work if I want to swap them both?

1. Yes, BUT the brake lines are different though so you would have to use your single input T-junction not the disco I two input one and a disco does not have the BOGE unit, but I doubt your 90 has it either. Also, I am not sure of the year cut off, but some early trucks have one shock on the front of the axle and one on the back so to swap a DI you would need to drill three holes and move the upper shock mount on one side. This assumes that it has a normal pinion flange, not the rotoflex (otherwise you would have to swap the normal flange onto it).

2. Yes, I can't think of anything problematic off the top of my head (maybe brake lines again) other than you would want to use your steering parts because the disco damper is mounted behind the axle and the disco is set up for the pitman arm that has the hole in it rather than the built in ball joint.

I remember swapping a later disco axle into Slade's 1990 Range Rover. We reused the RRC calipers, but had to drill/ream the holes in the calipers as the mounting tabs on the Disco axle were metric threaded, and the mounting holes in the calipers were Standaard. While the size difference was minor, it did need to be done to get it to bolt up.

Tom, I did the same thing on my Silver truck.. It has a 96 disco rear assemble.

I also put a 97 disco rear under my '84. I put the calipers from the disco on the 84's front axle. which I think may have been a later axle. The 97 axle you have uses wider radius arms, so you will need those if you want to use it.

I think the stock one will be fine.. I ran the stock one on the series 88 with the disk brake setup.. On my 90 I changed the entire brake setup to the NAS 90 configuration.

I did not. Like I said, I put the disco axle in and only changed the Tee on top of the axle where flex goes in. On the front I just swapped over the disco calipers since my Defender ones were dodgy. The disco front calipers were identical to the defender ones. I did not change any other parts in the brake system. The braking is noticeably improved, from very good to "i can't believe this is a land rover"
