I just bought a stainless cat-back Magnaflow muffler for $466, new, including free shipping.
This is the part: http://www.magnaflow.com/02product/displayapplications.asp?partnumber=16711
This is where I bought it: http://www.performancepeddler.com/detail.asp?PRODUCT_ID=MAG16711
Retails for $821, then they have an advertised price of $635, then at checkout I used code "clubgp" and that knocked another $150 off. Total of $466.
Maybe too good to be true, we'll see when/if the package arrives.
Greg
Follow-up Post:
Same website has the Borla cat back for $644 using the code.

They even have a video that demonstrates the sound of the Magnaflow on a Defender:

Take it with a grain of salt, my crappy speakers don't do it any favors,.

Hey Greg,
Sounds like you got a good deal to me, you bought the whole pre-made exhaust, not just a muffler, right? I'd be interested to hear your impressions of the quality, install and performance once you have it on, as well as see some photos of how it exits. Thanks..

wondering which stainless alloy they used -listing doesn't say and there are a bunch. Keep in mind its stainless not stainfree- I've seen stainless exhausts rust out and lots of non-316 stainless get crusty on boats. Certain stainless alloys dont do well in a salty environment.

Well, it comes with a "Lifetime Warranty" and the website claims it will "never rust". We may know better, but it sounds like if it does rust, they will replace it.
This is the response I got from Magnaflow:
"MagnaFlow uses 300 grade stainless for our mirror finished tips and muffler shells and 400 grade stainless on all of our tubing and mufflers. 400 grade stainless contains some carbon and iron content which makes it magnetic."

I plan on doing a thorough review of the entire process. More to follow.

Well, I am very happy.
The muffler and tailpipe from Magnaflow arrived in about 7 days, free ground shipping from CA. It installed in about an hour, considering I had to drill out one of the muffler flange bolts.
The sound is very nice, not too loud but still a nice rumble to it. I couldn't really notice any performance increase, but we'll see on my next fill-up.
I'll add some pics tomorrow.

Hey Greg any idea how it compares to a Borla? I havent owned my D90 long but I think the Borla is too loud. Id go to a magnaflow if it was quieter and I didnt lose any performance.

I know the Magnaflow is quieter than a Borla, but louder than stock. For me, the sound is just right, a little rumble you can hear, but it goes away if you are not paying attention to it.
I am not sure about the performance difference between the two tho'. I have felt an improvement in performance over the stock setup I had on there previously. They claim it should be around 10% over stock, but without a dyno I have no way of knowing. I would guess that the difference in performance between the Borla and the Magnaflow can't be that much.
One difference is also the Borla tucks into the wheel well a little better, so there is less of a chance for damage coming off a rock or something.

years ago I did a tune up plugs wires cap rotor and the magnaflow and my truck would pull hills a lot better and fuel mileage went up. There is a neglible increase in dare I say "performance".

Why don't you just have an exhaust shop install a Magnaflow and fab a tail pipe to your liking?

The 110 has two mufflers and the previous owner did some weird routing. I think it is too close to the boge. I need someone to take a good pic of a NRP 110 exhaust for me to use as a base.

I had a shop just cut off that second muffler, (What is it for anyway?) They put on a flowmaster and a new pipe and I always pass smog no problems. I got the bigger flowmaster so its not so loud. Feels and sounds fantastic.

Update; I easily remove the old flange bolt/nuts and the old muffler and tailpipe. Tail to muffler bolts were pretty fused together by rust, so I just cut the tailpipe assembly to finally enable dropping the old pipes off.
According to instructions I installed the muffler first using anti seize on the flange bolts, but left it loose so that the tail pipe assembly could be wrangled in from center out to tail. One problem I have encountered is that the hanger stem on the tailpipe seems to be not high enough to reach the rear rubber hanger. Also a bit of a pain to position/couple both assemblies together alone on your back. Not sure if my rear hanger assembly is standard, so I ordered one from RN to see. Otherwise might heat/torch the hanger arm and bend it out, as the rear tailpipe is hitting the rear cross when I try to reach the hanger. Oh, a jack might be useful to hold the weight of the muffler while working which I will try today. 2hrs of work so far and a little frustrated by PIA in the most simple to assemble things...

Update; 30 mnts to get it mounted today. My sequence- feed tailpipe center to rear- let sit-mount muffler to center hanger-let dangle- position rear tailpipe-tie off with rope to bumper- connect muffler to tailpipe (use anti seize at coupling and bolts-do not tighten- connect flange to muffler -not tightened- raise tailpipe insert rubber hanger on tailpipe arm first, use heavy screwdriver to leverage rubber hanger unto hanger mount- make sure all is in position as desired- tighten flange/muffler bolts/nuts to specs (30lbs)- tighten muffler to tailpipe collar (60lbs)- disconnect battery and reconnect (reset comp) and done.
Note: my scorpion bumps made the tailpipe hanging a little harder. pi
pe is in a good position-not bad clearance- sound is good not loud-maybe a tinge over stock but not unpleasant at all-passed the wife test thumbs up. Truck seems to pull uphill a little better, overall pretty happy with this set up. :)

this deal is still good with performance peddler. I have no affiliation with them, but they definitely have the best price. The issue may be that they (and every other reseller) can't get the part because magnaflow had no inventory of the cat back component in stock. I bought both the y pipe and the cat back through them after waiting for magnaflow to come though with the part.
No one else who had the part in stock was willing to match the deal. I was in no hurry. Shipping was quick, customer service was good.
Just thought I'd comment since it was a good experience.

FYI - Just ordered the cats and exhaust from Performance Peddler for $818.29 shipped. Was one-click away from ordering the Borla from AB until I read this thread. This has to be a great deal!

thats a ripoff IMO, I had that exact muffler and a tailpipe for less than 250. I dont see the reason to put that much in an exhaust ive smashed up three.....
Ive always liked the Borla though.....

That muffler can be had from Summit Racing and any exhaust shop can make you a tailpipe. They might even have a book full of fancy tips to choose from.

I know this is an old thread, but I wanted to let members know I just threw a Magna Flow Catback on my 1995 Defender 90 today due to reading this thread. I purchased it and had it installed in downtown San Diego for a grand total of $499.96! $350 for the muffler and pipe, $150 for the install. My good karma is finally coming back to me! Great independent shop too. Thanks Bob!
I was almost a little worried at the low price, but it looks and sounds perfect. It's mean and loud enough to turn heads if you want it to, but discreet enough to not be entirely obnoxious if you don't want to command attention. It's perfect, I wouldn't change a thing about it.
I'm having Bob put on some EBC Greenstuff brakes on all four corners next week along with some AB stainless braided brake lines.
