Non-Dealer Anti-freeze

I want to put my new 4 row radiator in this weekend (which is totally sweet, btw), but I didn't get by the local LR dealer to pickup the anti-freeze. I know we can't run anti-freeze with silicates in it, but I guess some of the orange stuff isn't quite right for brass soldered radiators either... Does anyone know what is safe to use that can be bought at the local autoparts store?

You should be fine with "orange" Antifreeze. As long as the antifreeze you use lacks phosphates you'll be ok according LR.

Antifreeze typically contains phosphates to soften the water. It does this by precipitating out other metals as salts. Since levels of Phosphates in US prodcued antifreeze are relatively low this isn't a concern. However, European water is considered on average too hard so they can't afford to even have moderate levels of phosphate in their antifreeze because large salt deposits could form and as a result create a blockage.

Wether the "Euro" water is too hard or not I'm not sure. This just one of those "suspect" pieces of information. But the sole purpose of the phosphate is to help soften the water.

I'm not sure about silicates though. Hope this helps Dave.

ORANGE IS BAD! Orange=leaks, why I dunno but it does.

we used a special no silicate quaker state.

Change every two years etc etc. Green "no silicate" is what you are looking for.

I ended up using the 'Honda' non-silicate 'green'. They were open!
