What are the signes for a T-case on its way out? So far I have bang and what sounds like grinding that went away and came back every 20 miles. Is it possible to repair it depending on what's found in it once it's opened?

Tyler, Hippert would know. He had to replace his last fall. Did it himself too.

Drain it, pull the cover off and watch out for falling parts. You can repair, I'm not sure what it costs for the parts inside. You may also be able to get one used for cheap. When mine died it just started grinding then crunching and by the time I got home it was real bad. Then I looked at at the repair manual and I didn't like what I saw about rebuilding it so I just threw in a 110 case. It takes about a weekend to swap it out as long as you have someone to help you. You will also need to make an adapter for the jack to hold the T-case. I have one if you need it. Didn't someone Just put crawler gears in their T-case? Maybe you can upgrade.

Depending upon what needs to be replaced, it can be very expensive to repair an LT230. The input gear is around $300 and the intermediate gear $500-600. Bearings are $50-80 each. So you can easily spend $1000 on parts.

Here's a couple options: Get a rebuilt LT230 from Rovers Down South for around $1200 exchange. Or get a good used LT230 out of a Disco (more readily available than Defender cases). That's what I did recently. It only had 30,000 miles on it, and when I opened it up, it looked brand new. It's does require that you do a few things though. There are several extra sensors/switches you don't need, and there isn't a speedo sender. And I think the front output flange is different. Anyway, as long as you have your old case, you can just swap over the parts that are different.

When was the last time you changed the fluid? This could be normal. When mine died chunks of gears came out the drain hole.

A month ago. Next on my list are the CVs. On a side note anyone know what error code 48 is? I'm assuming its the seedo is broken code. Speaking of which where on the t case is the speedo?

Probably no help but are you sure it is broken? I had this symptom. All that was needed was to take it in and out of low/diff lock a few times. Just hadnt gone back into normal properly, even though the light went out. No probs since. But as you have found a bit of metal in the oil there may be more amiss. Just thought I would mention.

From the FAQ section

Code 48 - Stepper motor

The seedo cable comes out of the very back of the T-case right by the Drum brake.

From Rangie.com

CODE 48 - Stepper motor - check base idle speed- see setting procedure.
Refer to tests 15 and 16 of continuity test procedure. Check road speed sensor-refer to test 25 of continuity test procedure.

Continuity test procedure (http://www.rangie.com/articles_topic.php?id=167&cat=6&subCat=26) At Rangie.com.

:grin Good luck, I would reset first and see if the code reappears.
